Turning Motor Over

Hello All,

I had a go at trying to turn the Holden 202 red motor over by hand so I can find Top Dead Centre for Number 1 piston - on its compression stroke. Grasping the fan blades and turning it only causes it to slip on the fan belt. There is no extruding nut at the end of the the harmonic balancer. So there is no place to fix a socket and a bar to try and rotate the engine.

Do I have to get a harmonic balancer puller and use that as fixed point that I can then get sufficient purchase so I can turn the motor over. Yes I have some of the spark plugs removed.

Usually all you need to do is press your thumb firmly on the fan belt just past the water pump pulley to increase its grip while you move the fan. Temporarily overtightening it might help too but you're likely to forget to dial the tension back so not recommended. If you want to turn the engine over by the crank pulley just insert two bolts into the puller threads and use a lever such as a large screw driver. But the thumb trick mostly does it for me unless the engine is brand new and super tight.

Or jack up a wheel and turn that.

I have a 202 and I can move the Land Rover without putting any tension on belt... one way, but the other way I need tension, belt dosent seem over tight, I wonder if compression is down.

Just tighten belt and remove all plugs

use a socket on the alternator pully bolt and press down on the top of the belt as you turn it.

use the crank handle if you have the adaption done for it.

bar the flywheel from underneath.

put compressed air down whichever cylinder is on the power strokes spark plug hole.

That is caused by the belt stretching so if you are turning towards the alternator it will stretch & away from the alternator it won't.
