Have noticed my defender 03 TD5 A/C compressor stays on even though it's not switched on - obviously don't need/want it on in victoria at the moment- also not helping fuel economy - can i just simply disconnect it somewhere until work out what's causing it?

There were some td5 Defenders that didn't have A/C What they have is a pully wheel in place of the compresor They also have a smaller belt . You can Disconect the electrics going the the compresor . The thing is are you sure yours is running? or just spinning , because can't stop that ? Jim

The compressor just freewheels when the air cond is switched off, If your worried it may be stuck on, have a listen inside the cab when its idling, you will hear the refrigerant being pumped through the system and the evap coil will be cold and icing up. There will be a wire going into the front of the compressor near the pulley(magnetic clutch signal, usually red or black). It should have a bullet connector on it, just disconnect the wire and tape both ends up. Wouldn't worry about pulling it out because as soon as you do, there will be a heatwave and you'll want it again.
