View Full Version : Make more sperm or humans are doomed.

Come on fellows, our sperm counts have halved in 40 years and the future of humanity is at stake.
So lose weight, stop smoking, skip steroids and don't keep your mobile near your privates. This is serious.

Just means you get to do the deed twice as many times to produce offspring.

Apparently less than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen is a low count.
I'm not sure how to measure that. 😯

It only takes one.
The other 14,999,999 per ml are losers.

Something to do with not having to chew before the swallow, IIRC.

Apparently, the subject has been under discussion for the last 25 years or so, and there is no definite answer as to whether the effect is real or not. A major issue is that this meta-study has combined a large number of other studies, where the measurements are not necessarily made in the same way. Perhaps the major issue with the data is that most of the data in recent years comes from fertility clinics, and the increase in low sperm counts may simply reflect the fact that more men with problems having children are going to fertility clinics. Or a number of other unknown issues with the sample selection.

This said, obesity is a known factor depressing sperm count - and it has been on the increase in the western world over this period. On the other hand, smoking is too, and this has been decreasing!

Yes, I saw some expert saying the methodology in some of the individual studies is suspect, but the overall trend is consistent.
As you say the samples come from fertility clinics and so may only represent men whose counts are low. Maybe those counts have been low since birth.
Also, apparently the counts are much lower in developed western nations than they are in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Not sure what that means.
Maybe western men are fatter and women find them less attractive?
I've been firing blanks for a while now, since I visited Dr Snip, so it's too late for me. Come on you young fellows, it's time to shape up for the future of humanity.

There is also the abundance of evidence in many, many peer reviewed journals that show dozens of commonly found chemicals lower sperm counts in both animals and humans.

How many more people can the earth sustain ? Zero growth , maybe a slower trend to an overall reduction would be better. Might ease the strain on resources and comments of too many others ruining my ( insert adjective ) .

Yes, many chemicals affect sperm count, but it's hard to avoid them.

I really should be more scientifically interested in this topic, but there are too many crude jokes possible to make this a viable point of discussion. [biggrin]

Its not all humans, only Westerners.
Middle East and Africans are still doing well. Hence their overpopulation and consequent migration to fill the blanks in the West.
What is the carrying capacity of the planet anyway?

Thats easy, if you look near the entrance there should be a small plaque or sticker stating the carrying capacity. Its often a combined number for both seated and standing.

Depend on whose point of view I guess. Humans may already be at plague numbers, judging by how we're fouling our own nest.

I think we are doomed to destroy ourselves, actually. Home sapiens are only a relatively recent arrival on Earth, but there are plenty of precedents of species destroying themselves. So, that's a cheery thought.

Deer deer Mick. Look what you've done you've got all worked up and gone off half cocked.
The human population is more than four times what it was at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution and is rising exponentially. If Humans become extinct it will be because they have overpopulated the planet, not just fizzled out.

Sperm production has halved because we have fouled our nests and poisoned ourselves.
