When I went into the garage this morning I noticed this....

http://www.aulro.com/albums/ADM333-94-RR-Vogue-SE/Rangie_wheel.jpg

Any suggestions on what to do.

I did not notice anything odd driving home yesterday, but by the looks of it is either brake fluid or oil from the swivel pin housing.

Probably shouldn't drive it too far like that.

might be swivel housing seal , i know people who just pump the swivel housing full of grease https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

It's not rustproofing for the rims I spose

Looks like swivel seal issue given the colour of the fluid

BTW, nice looking tyres

Hi ADM333
I would suggest the first thing you do is pull the wheel off so you can determine where the oil / fluid is coming from. Then you have an idea of how serious it is. I.E. if you can drive it to get parts to fix it or put it on a tow truck, or some where in between

Without trying to sound like me mum, Safety first.

Hope it isn't to serious

if its brake fluid you should hose it off asap....
it makes for a great paint stripper.....

if its gear oil it wont hose off.........

so simply spraying it with water will tell you what it is......
looks like gear oil........(because you still have paint on your rim....)

as long as there is oil in the hub and none on your brakes it should be ok
for a short run to the nearest repair place....or you can fix it yourself....

if its the swivel hub seal...the hardest part will be removing the bolts which
are loctited in like there is no tomorrow....not hard...more of a PITA....

Sorry mate... I hope it's a cheap repair for you whatever it is https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Looks like a hub seal gone, swivel seal wont usually cover the rim whereas the hub seal leak will drip straight onto the rim and centrifugal force will cover the rim entirely, had the same a few weeks ago, new hub seal now no problem.

Agree with loanrangie here, hub seal leak.

Done a few of those in my time, easy job and takes a couple of hours. Make sure that you use thread lock on the caliper bolts or that could turn nasty 8O

Yes, grease is the solution to swivel leaks. I use a moreys/grease combo and this works for me. No more swivel leaks and pretty much sealed for life https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Good luck with it.

Another vote for the hub seal.

Well I can't seem to get the f%$#@# wheel nuts off

A combination of them just recently being rattled on by the tyre place and the dumb wheel brace / wheel nut combination that exists on these models.

However I was able to remove the plastic centre plug which revealed the hub seal as the culprit.

Have you got a breaker bar? They're not cheap, but i bought one for $50 8 years ago from trade tools (sidchrome) and it's been the best tool I've owned. Plus you'll need a extension bar (short 60m one works a treat) and a 27mm socket. Or you can use your std one and jump on it like I do (108 kg of force will undo anything https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ )

Rattle guns, I hate them with a passion on wheel nuts (great for working on the Rangie otherwise). I usually looosen them up and re-torque them as per the workshop manual once I get the Rangie home from a tyre place.

Hope you get the bastards off, good luck with it o9therwise.

Maybe you should hit them with a hammer! This may actually help to loosen them, and even if it doesn't work you'll feel better https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Well I know what the problem is now, and popular opinion suggests that

a) its not a big job to fix, and
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ its reasonably safe to drive down to the repairer.

So although I could take the wheel off for the satisfaction ..... I'll just leave it to the experts.

Thanks for the help guys

Well the Rangie went off to my very good friends at Rover Tech today to be sorted.

I know I should give these things a go myself, but right now I am quite time challenged.

It seems that when I had the (Quote seqfisho: "nice looking tyres") put on, the "technicians" (at the tyre place) not only buggered the hub seal cap but also somehow managed to tighten all of the wheel nuts to way beyond the specified torque.

The guy today said their rattle guns could not remove them and he ended up using a large socket and brace with a long piece of scaffolding pipe.

So the bottom line is I did not have a hope in haites of getting the wheel off by myself and even more luckily I found out before getting stuck in the scrub somewhere.

Wheel nuts to tight is a common problem when you have them done at tyre places. You would think they would teach the guys that one with the number of wheels they do each day.
