Hello all,
A question for the Discovery II owners (and possibly TD5 Defender owners).
Why does the ABS modulator make some very quiet "electronic" type noise, even when the car is off?
The noise is noticable, particularly when the bonnet is open. You have to listen when it is very quiet, and you will hear a quiet, electronic type noise. Imagine it is a siren, or car alarm going off, just very quiet.
Unless my D2 is the odd-one, I'd imagine all other D2's do this. If so, why does the ABS Modulator make noise when the car iginition is off? I am sure the noise originates from the ABS modulator, but I am happy to be stand corrected if my hearing is out !!!!
Cheers

Hi
Do you hear this whirring noise when you shut the engine down and it goes for 30secs or so?????? If so its very normal, its actually the centrifical oil filter winding down.May people have told me my turbo sounds cactus and I say nah its the oil filter, you get heaps of funny looks, not many ask what you mean or take you to task.

G'day LandyAndy,
Absolutely not the centrifugal filter, that is a distinctive noise by itself... The noise I'm talking about you can hear hours, days, weeks etc after turning the car off. The noise I hear is not the "whir" type noise of the centrifugal filter slowing down, but a electronic type noise.
Thanks for the reply though, and if you have a TD5 Disco II or Defender, perhaps you can check if yours does something similiar?
Thanks and regards

I have this 'look at me' light to.
I have had the test book on it and it indicates the pretensioner on the drivers seat belt is malfunctioning. To replace the pretensioner is about $250 used so one day I will get it changed. It too started sporadically but now is on all the time.
Cheers,
Lyndon.

my TD5 makes a noise when its off too. I hear the whirring noise of the filter for about 30 secs after switch off & if I lift the bonnet I can hear a whirr, click, click, whirr noise coming from near the ABS. I thought it might have to do with the alarm because the red dash light starts flashing not long after you turn off the engine & leave the car without switching on the alarm.

I just listened to the ABS modulator and it is making an electronic noise.
I changed the ABS relay and it is still doing it.

I just lifted the bonnet on my car and its as quiet as a mouse. I last used my ABS on Weds this week to see if it actually works. Pulled up from 100 kph on a loose metal area just fine.
So yes they work without the ticking.
Thought  In the Defender the clock is mounted in the dash directly behind the ABS unit. I have moved my clock to a different position. Try disconnecting the clock and see if the ticking / whirring stops!
There is no reason for the ABS to have power when the ignition is off.

Hi,
Its not the ABS or the centrifugal filter.
Its the ANTI THEFT STATUS signal generated by the BCU
This is shown on the instrument cluster as a blinking RED LED 8O
If you listen in the engine compartment (you will hear a muffled beep, beep) and then watch the blinking LED you will see that they are pulse driven to the same beat.
The pulse is generated for when you arm the alarm system
and the reason that you can hear it is because it is doing its job
There is nothing wrong https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Well I have the same noise to and its definatley the ABS.
I have been told the ABS is always sensing, even when the car is off.

Had my DII with ACE for five years and it has never made the noise described. It did yell at me a month or two back when the hydraulic connection failed, sprayed fluid all over the turbo and started a beaut little fire, 8O but that is another story...
I tend to side with the anti-theft explanation. Then again, to test if it is the ABS, disconnect the ABS (pull the fuse) and see if it still happens. No noise would = not the ABS.

Mark

Well my ABS relay is ticking as well as the ABS modulator - I've changed the relay to no effect. If I pull the ABS fuse both ABS relay and ABS modulator are silent so to my way of thinking it IS the ABS system. This fuse, when pulled, lights up the ABS, TC, HDC on the dash so I assume it disables these systems as they are all linked.
To those others with the same noise, have listen to the ABS relay in the fuse box and it should be pulsing (ticking) as well.
My ABS, TC and HDC are working fine as tested yesterday.

The clock thoery is out. I went back to check and I cannot hear it either.
So I'm either stone deaf or my car is different.
