Hi all,
I am new to this site but need some serious help concerning my 96 V8 Disco. From the day I bought it a few months back it has had an iregular idle and some times will not idle at all, and when starting it after even just a few hours of none use takes atleast 15 seconds to crank it up. Today, however, when I went to start it it just did not want to go. Have power to everything, fuel at the injectors and it cranks but will not fire. Can somebody please point me in the right direction as to where to start looking for the problem. Will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Leigh

Leigh,

The poor idle can be caused by a faulty vac advance unit (you should not be able to suck air through it continously), the butterfly valve in the throttle body being dirty ( not shutting properly ), the Idle Air Controler ( aka stepper motor ) not working properly, dodgy coil etc etc.

If you have spark and fuel ( ground a spark plug and sniff for petrol ) then its probably you timing thats too far out for the thing to start. The timing problem ( crook vac advance ) normaly shows up as extra bad fuel economy, like 30l/100km instead of 20l/100km.

HTH's

Where are you ? as there may be a reputable LR mechanic local to you.

Good luck

Bruce.

ignition module would be one of the first suspects to look at as well.

Thanks for info Bruce,
I am in western Sydney, Richmond way.
I am planning to change the coil before the days end as I have a spare and was thinking that could be a cause. I have been getting about 450 km's out of a tank of fuel in traffic and on a recent trip to vic got 550, but that was pushing it. Just made it to Albury! LOL. Will check all other things mentioned, again thanks.

Spot on - having gone through a few of these the symptoms sound familiar.

If your ignition module is on the distributor where it slowly cooks, I would consider getting it moved up near the coil behind the right front light where it will remain nice and cool.
