All,

I'm in the market for an upgrade of my 7D to a full frame camera. Has to be Canon as I have a couple of L lenses and a Lee filter set that I want to keep. My use is 99% landscape so I'm leaning towards the 5Ds R but the 5D MkIV is very attractive with all its features.

The 5Ds R is $1000 cheaper and has 40% better resolution.

Thoughts (excluding a move to Nikon [smilebigeye] ) would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

5DSr -
Pros: New bodies are released every years so a a cheaper one will let you invest in another good quality lens. If it doesn't work out, there's always next year
Cons: The megapixel wars are over. Higher resolution now just means higher noise and more drive space taken up per image. A 24mp image even cropped a bit will give you an amazing image at poster size (24"x36"). A max ISO limit of 6400 while good only a couple of years ago, doesn't really cut it with new cameras.

5D MkIV
Basically the opposite.
Pros: Not only higher ISO available but much higher quality images available at previous ISOs. Low light landscapes look good. Handheld indoor shots look good. Astrophotography looks good.
Cons: More expensive and there will probably be a 5DSrii out at the end of next year which has the same low light capabilities as the MkIV

Personally I'd suggest going for the MarkIV if you can afford it. The image quality is so much better, even with the lower resolution and especially in low light. And isn't that what it's all about?

Mate,

You've unmade my mind up with that summary [bigsad]

I'd talked myself out of the 5d and into the 5DsR on the basis of resolution and printing (not that I've done a great deal of that but I'd like to.....), not to mention the $1000 saved that I could put towards a 16-35mm f2.8L III IS USM.

Thinking, thinking..........
