View Full Version : Long Range Fuel Tanks

Hi All,
Any recommendations for the largest capacity replacement fuel tank for my fairly thirsty ’95 V8 Disco?
I normally carry extra fuel in jerry cans on our trailer. I’ve been thinking about a long range replacement tank for some time now but ARB and TJM only seem to have auxiliary tanks with pretty limited capacity. I’m sure some of you have been through this exercise before but a search of the archives wasn’t at all helpful.
Cheers,

Try Longranger.com or I think there is also Long Ranger may be the same. Also 4wdwharehouse I think have them.

Hi Craig,
I've looked at several web sites and all give pictures of a product but only the LRA site gives information for a Disco (145l replacement tank). I am interested in experience from anyone who has actually fitted replacement or auxillary fuel tanks to a Disco.
Cheers,
Kenjo

Mine is a defender but I have long ranger tanks. ons 127 litre and the other is 30 litres. I've had no problems with it. Try them and se what they can do for you.

Long Ranger are the tanks supplied by ARB and TJM. It was a while back when I went to their stores to ask these questions. If I recall correctly it was a 30 litre auxiliary they could fit for quite a lot of money. That's only the equivalent of one and a half jerry cans and would give me a total of 119 litres including the Disco main tank (89l I think it is). I do think they had a replacement tank also but only marginally bigger than the original. I guess the ALR 145 litre tank seems to be the go. I was hoping that maybe someone would know of a better solution.
Cheers,

Thanks Rob,
Long Range Automotive (LRA 145l Disco replacement tank) are the ones I was planning on. It looks like I did my homework as there seems to be nothing better.

I am just loading the current picture of the back of my Defender with the long range tanks. Go to the Gallery in trips and treks - Ace's VII 7-8/1/06
its on the last page of trips and the last photo in the album.
Hope this helps.

thats actually a long range tank for the petrol land cruisers.......
sill tanks wont affect any angles you mention as they dont sit lower than your
chassis rails......
but can be easily damaged on rocks etc....
have a look in the gallery in noddys album.....he has sill tanks on kimba
and im sure he will have some pics of them there.....

QUOTE

136L Replacement Fuel Tank / LONG RANGER
A Long Ranger replacement or auxiliary tank means fuel is carried where it does not hinder 4WD use, and there is no loss of ground clearance. In some instances, a suspension upgrade will improve the 4WD due to the extra weight to be carried. This should not be seen as a negative, as we recommend most 4WDs require suspension upgrades or improvements before serious off roading or a major outback trip is planned

Hi Jake
I have a sill tank in my Defender and can take some shots for you. I like them, mind you I don't intend to do any off-roading where the sill tank would effect a decision to tackle a piece of terrain or not. I'd say the effect on ability in extreme terrain is minimal if anything.
If I won lotto I'd put a water tank on the passenger side to save the hassle of large containers in the cabin.
For me the conceptual advantage of the auxilary tank is that it is an alternative fuel source so if something happens to put either tank out of action (it could be dirty fuel or a puncture from a rock etc) then there is another tank to get you to where you want to be.

I am fitting a Longranger sill tank to my Defender.
So far I am impressed with the quality.
The plan is to get it running on Diesel & then convert it over to Waste Vegetable Oil. Got the tank in & I have the heat exchanger too. Just need a good filter & Fuel Pump now.

I have fitted the Long Ranger 130Ltr tank to my Disco 2004 V8 and have had no trouble with it off road or on. I Had an OME suspension upgrade before the tank was fitted. The disco's handling is better now than from stock, that is for sure.

I fitted a long ranger tank from out of town 4wd yesterday. 120 litres. Fits very well. did it by myself, but could have used an extra pair of hands. $450 - was ex-floor stock. The original disco tank had cracked around the vent outlet, leaked badly when full or on an angle. was subject to a recall but Land Rover didn't want to know!
I found it here: http://www.oot4wd.com.au/=Forsale.asp
The local ARB outlet wanted about $1000 fitted 8O

i just got this reply from Browne Davis the other day. I'm pretty sure they'd have something for D1 as well.
Alan,
thankyou for your e-mail
we make 142lt long range replacement tanks to suit your Landover and 62lt extension tanks to fit as additional with them
both tanks fill & empty together through the standard filler giving effectively 1 large 204lt rear tank. The rear departure angle is unchanged and ground clearance is only 40mm below standard just behind and protected by the diff, fuel gauge reads for the big total volume just as it did for the standard tank
cost is $883 and $743 respectively
regards

Wardy – What LR is yours?
That’s positive info! I had emailed Brown Davis but got an agent in Armadale. He was good enough to reply and give me the Melbourne contact number. I planed to give them a call when I got back to Oz in a couple of weeks. I’ll email Brown Davis now to ask about tanks for the D1.
Cheers,
