The other option is a shingleback carrier, two bike version

Dangle in the breeze type. Haven't seen a stick up type around that sits on a spare tyre.
There is a swing away Thule stick up - basically you swing away the bike rack then open the door

That's why the gripsport has my attention as it can mount to the centre of the spare wheel and fully supports the two bikes.
I will have a swing away spare wheel carrier so that counts out the Thule.
Oh, we also need to open the door from the inside i.e. With out hopping out of the car to first open a spare wheel carrier or other swing away attachment.

Why do you need a stick up type mount? Just curious more than anything. Is it because of a particular suspension design?

Just don't want the bikes swaying back for forth.....want them nice and solid as our two high end bikes will follow us around on our travels.

I need something that can carry five bikes (I'll run) - and swings away from the door.
Suggestions?

I have a "Yakima" as shown in the photo of the Jeep. Mounted on the swing out spare wheel carrier on a D1, 2 bike rack, although there are bigger ones. Never a problem with it but I do use one of those cable type bike locks to keep the bike snug at the bottom.
Not sure how you could open the door from the inside without releasing the swing out spare carrier. Could not with mine as the lock is on the rear bumper.

I'd like one that can go into a tow hitch, but swing to the side. This way I can still get to the storage area under the 130 tray. Might have to give Shingleback a call and see what he can do...

My GripSport arrived along with a Rijidij Carrier........fitted them last night
Em happy with both products.....and achieved what I wanted, can open the rear door from inside the defender with bikes on, bikes lower than roof line, no requirement to spin handle bars, be able to carry roadies/MTB/FatBikes, rear door opens fully when loaded with bikes
I only just thought about whether the Awning can be deployed with the bikes in.
I know some you younwill be biting at then bit to point out the weight ok the spare wheel carrier, height etc etc I've taken it all into consideration and discussed with Murray.
MTB this morning
