View Full Version : Removing/Drying carpets in a D2 and sealing doors

1. Has anyone easily and succesfully removed the carpets from a '99 D2 to dry them out after a good soaking on the weekend? Is there much involved and do they go back in easily? What needs to be removed before the carpets will come out?
2. Has anyone succesfully managed to seal up the doors to window level for water crossings and if so how?
I was going to use some 5-7mm foam cable I bought but the only way to get it through the seals will be to slice along them, then try and re-seal the cuts - can't feed it through the rubber seals as it is to tight.
Another suggestion was to use silicone inside the seals.
Any thoughts appreciated, Mick

You couldf always weld the doors shut https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

You stole my line
Amongst all the helpful hints here, I'd love to hear what you come up with Mick. Just make sure it's an easy, cost effective, non-labour intensive solution.
'Cause I don't want any hassles when I rip off your idea
Have you moved your ECU? If so where'd you put it? Was it simple?
Cheers mate

Still contemplating how to seal the beast but will keep you posted. As for the ECU, mine sits under the bonnet next to the battery housing, so not as vulnerable as under the seat but I will be looking to get that as water tight as I can soon also.

I wouldn't be making it that water tight because if you do you run the risk of floatation and in a flowing river crossing that could be dangerous, better that the water comes in really, and as for the ECU if your in water that deep then i think you would have more serious problems than the ECU.
If you go into the D2au Yahoo groups there's a file on a sealed ECU for a DII with a snorkle fitted to it, from memory it was Mike Hayes or Michael Smootin that made it.

Best way to seal the doors is to use the round flyscreen rubber stuff (no idea what it is called). Just use a coathanger or wire to feed it around each seal and then silicon up all the gaps. There are 2 gaps in each seal at the bottom of the doors, dont forget the rear door.
Not only does it help with water but dust as well.
The D2a had a lot better sealing and you only had to silicon up the slits.
Most of the guys who thrash there TD5's have not worried about the ECU's and only 1 person I know of has had a problem, and that was caused by showing off for the camera. see below.

Thanks walker
Not sure what flyscreen rubber you mean but will do some searching....does anyone have the proper name for the stuff?
Great pic by the way and looks like something I would try, although you say he messed up his ECU?

Ok, checked it out. It is called flyscreen spline. You can get it by the meter at bunnings or other hardware shops.
