A mate of mine thought it would be funny to bring a bunch of bananas onto my boat and not tell me. After taking water going over the bar at Forster, not getting a bite all morning and losing one of my knives overboard, he gets the bananas out for lunch. As he was about to chow down on one I grabbed the bunch and hurled them overboard. He did not see the humour and asked what else there was for lunch. My suggestion of pilchards and raw squid was not taken too kindly.
The afternoon was great with many good snapper and trag being caught. I know its just a superstition but there have been other incidents with bananas on mine and other peoples boats that are associated with the yellow devil fruit.
I believe it stems from sailing ships taking on supplies of fresh fruit to ward off scurvy. As bananas give off ethylene, which is a gas that promotes ripening, much of the fruit would prematurely ripen and rot leading to a shortage of fresh supplies and therefore sickness on board.
Whatever the reason - no bananas on my boat!!!!!
