Hi Guys,
Im currently making a new centre dash pod for the RR which I will vacuum cast in polyurethane, other than VDO, what other brands are available here in Australia. Im after 3 (fuel, battery, oil pressure) with black faces, white numbering and needles 2 inches in diameter. My old 77 has smiths gauges in it, but I dont think they are available anymore and dont think the speco ones are much cop.
TIA

Other than VDO Vision Black, Autometer Z Series are the closest match. They are available in 52mm, black face with side lighting, the same as original Defender gauges, but come with red needles.

These are Speco gauges - all 5 with senders / fitting kits cost me less than $200.

Thanks guys for the info so far!
Hey LRH do you have any trouble reading the gauge on the far left? Does the angle bother you? Im going to make a dash pod, and to avoid parallex error I was going to twist them up and toward the driver.

Does anybody twist their gauges ?
A mate once told me that it was an old racing/rally trick to turn the gauges so when everything was running right all the needles were vertical. All it took then was to cast an eye over the gauges if all needles were vertical everything was OK.

No problems reading these gauges - they are in a similar location to the factory gauges in the earlier carbie Rangies.
Only issue I have found is the reflection in the windscreen at night with the lights on - but easy to get used to.

I used to turn mine in the rally car....
Quick glance and if they are all 12 oclock everything is sweet....

I wouldn't bother twisting them for normal use in a rangie, but I would want to angle them to face the driver.
What is your instrument console going to look like??

Your on the money Jay, thats what im going to do toward and up so that they are more in line with the driver.
Im modelling them up in Solidworks right now, I need to measure the curvature in both directions on the dash this week to get it to fit right.
Once I have it drawn I will post up some screen images.

In the centre of my 92 dash there is a a rubber mat which one assumes would be ideal for holding a smoke pack or alike just above teh clock. On the 77 its where the speaker use to be im guessing there is a silly grill there. Its held by 4 screws under the rubber mat. What I was planning is drilling the holes out and replacing them with riv nuts so I have something decent to anchor it with.

Thats a real quick knock up of the idea, trying to keep it as low as possible unlike those http://www.consoles.com/ which look out of place.
Give you an idea of size, those guages are modelled at a dia 56mm its 220 long and shouldnt exceed 100mm above the existing dash. They have 8° twist both towards the driver and upwards. I may increase this after the first prototype.
I need to put some extra switches in as well. 1 for view each sill tank, 2. for the transfer pump. 3. for which battery im looking at. I have other switches as well to position such as controling the thermo fans 1 on, both on, Auto and all off.
