As I have a spare winch lying around, I am just wondering if anybody here has fitted this mount. I know the Terra Firma mount is a lot cheaper, but it seems that the Devon one is approved by LR (in Uk anyway), and it has all the hardware except the fairlead. Also if you have fitted one, where did you put the control box? As I have a 2nd battery that position is not available. I was considering putting it under the plastic cover in front of the drivers side firewall. Seems there is a lot of space there. My winch can be wireless remote or connected, and I thought that might be a reasonable accessable position. Only other place would be behind the grill, but it would be annoying having to remove the grill.
And yes I know I could almost buy a bull bar for the price of the Devon unit. But I have yet to see a bull bar I like, and fits in with asthetics of the car (in my opinion anyway). I dont plan on having to use the winch very often but its nice to have some "insurance". Also it might be possible to get a discount of we got enough people interested.
Thanks David

You might want to take a look in the Markets under External Accessories....

Thanks Ron,
That looks very much like the Terra Firma one. The Devon one replaces the bumper bar cross member and also can come with eyelets for towing if need be. The problem with that type of cradle is that it is about 3cms away from the bumper bar when you mount everything up and you need to put spacers or washers to pack up the gap between the plate and the fairlead. Thats why the Devon one is more expensive.

Can you post a web link to the Devon unit David?

Near the bottom is a link to a pictorial of the fit out on a D3.
2nd post is fitout on a D4
As I said they fitted a relay and cut out switch and other bits where my 2nd battery is mounted. Also I did not like the idea of the control box (they call it the contactor) so exposed at the front of the vehicle. I think it is prone to water /mud etc damage. My winch is an Ironman on so I am considering mounting it in the plastic box in front of the driver side.

This mount does look nice and neat But looking at the installation instructions it looks like removing the winch to do regular maintenance will be pretty "Fiddly".

I love it, but that is crazy expensive and no doubt delivery and installation cost go right up with that version!
Definitely solves the issue of increased ability without sacrificing style
What's the feedback on the other discreet mounts so far? Who usually installs them?

Yes the postage is crazy. I did a "dry run" purchase and the cost reduced to about 838.00 but the postage was about 350.00???!!!!! That then makes it a $1700 AUS purchase. Ouch? The only differences between the Terra Firma (199.00) and this one is you get full instructions, the cross bar, the number plate flip mechanism, and templates for cut out and mounting brackets. I guess all that weighs up and the cost of postage is expensive. I note that someone on this sight started to do the job and then stopped because of insurance and ADR concerns. I do not worry so much, but I am finding it hard to justify such an outlay for a bar that I question you may not really need, even though it would give better strength and a number plate flipping bracket. I will do the job myself, as I have with my past vehicles. I have the tools to do some fabrication, so am now weighing up cost v convenience.

Thanks Ron,

I can't find the Terra Firma mount that looks the same. My original plan was to fit this bar to my L322 but I've given up on that.

The discrete winch mount will be illegal to fit unless engineered as it modifies the front of the vehicle - however LR did sell the non discrete mount as an OEM option here where the winch hangs out the front and this is legal - not the prettiest but is an option.

The Terra Firma one is just the winch mounting plate and a few nuts and bolts. In reality thats all you need but because you rip off some of the backing plastic reinforcing on the bumper bar there is a gap between the front of the plate and the bumper bar and then the fairlead. You then need to put washers to fill in the spaces so as to not deform the bumper bar. The Devon has a metal strip across the front that supports the bumper and better protects the washer bottle. As a result it is a flush mount between the winch cradle, the bumper bar and the fairlead. Also the Devon provides the number plate flap to expose the winch hook. I guess one could call the Terra Firma the cheap copy cat and the Devon the full Monty. Yes its expensive (almost the same price as a ARB bull bar). But I like the front of mine as it is, I dont need lights, I have the CB arial side mount so cannot see any other need for a BB. I have read all the members comments about the virtues of a BB, but I just dont like the BB, but want the insurance of a winch should others get stuck and I have to pull them out! Ha HA[smilebigeye].

Those number plate flippers are cheap as chips on eBay so I wouldn't include that as justification.
Given the terra firma is such a simple design do you think it is possible to take it to your local steel fabricators/engineers and get them to make one the same but with a slightly longer reach to fill the void to the bumper? Save having washers involved

I quite like this option, and we looked at a second hand car which had one fitted,,,
When we queried it as an option when we bought ours, it was about a $5 grand cost, which included fitting etc. Being in the position that we do a lot of country miles, we preferred the bull bar option.

There's this one, not sure who makes it though:

This is what the non discrete winch looks like mounted on a RR and RRS - looks similar on the D3/D4 - very untidy and if done by anyone else other than LR would be illegal due to the amount it projects out the front.
