I didn't have an account but something to do with 3rd party hosting I.e. They stopped you using their links in a thread on here.

What happened to cause so many photobucket pictures to die?

As Weeds said, they stopped allowing 3rd party hosting of pics on their servers. They then locked anyone's pics that were linked anywhere and demanded US$399 a year to unlock them and allow 3rd party hosting of them. As you can imagine almost everyone dumped Photobucket like a hot potatoe and those that can be bothered are using different sites now and fixing threads where possible. I may do this to a couple of mine at some stage but it's so low on my list of things to do it may or may not happen.

In my case, I managed to get all my pics back before my account was locked and then I deleted them all from Photobucket and closed my account, so this fix won't work on my threads but it should on many others that got caught out.

This article sums it up pretty well - Why is Photobucket holding the internet to ransom? | Aqueous Digital (http://www.aqueous-digital.co.uk/social-media/why-is-photobucket-holding-the-internet-to-ransom)

I don't trust any of these free ones as far as I can throw them... I've been burned twice now. First webshots, then photobucket.

So I bought a URL, rent some webspace and run a piwigo gallery there for my own use. I can change hosts as often as I like and my links will still work.... :)

But then I'm an IT genius.

(Was that just Incisor I heard choking on his coffee.... yep... he knows me well enough )

Just incredible. The rise and fall of photobucket.

I've done the same as you VladTepes, I got sick of having to keep changing URL's everytime the host made an alteration and now I just run my own website and host my own photos on it and I can do what I like with. Technically much harder to do, but definitely a much better solution for me at least.

That's what I want to do but I lack the knowledge to do this unfortunately.

Homestar I am happy to assist you if you like.
Would be an idea to have some idea of what extent of IT knowledge (if any) you have.

PM me if you prefer

Meanwhile have a read of what I did here: LandyVlad – Gallery & Blog (http://www.landyvlad.net)

sadly using budget hosting will come back and bite you in the end the same as photo bucket. you'll run out of inodes long before you expect to... espicially if you have wordpress and pwigio on the same hosting

some even have file count quotas as well as inode limits. and it that doesnt get you cpu quotas will.

it is cheaper and more reliable in the long run to get a flickr pro account i'll think you'll find...

That would likely be a good option if it were JUST for photos but I have hosting for other things besides that.

I don't doubt that at some point I'll need to pay a touch more monthly, and I can live with that.

The take home message is there's no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to webhosting.
