Broken Exhaust stud

Anyone got some advice on the best way to remove a broken exhaust manifond stud before I do more damage trying to remove it. The stud appears to be either flush or almost flush with the head but I havn't remove the manifold yet to confirm.

IF its flush with the head the only option you have is to drill down the center of the stud and then use a easy out to remove the rest of the stud........if its sticking out a bit ssoak the area in release fluid penertron or such like then with a pointy drift try and knock it around to unscrew it which ever way you try I would het a Heli-coil the right size just in case you stuff the thred....god luck

Try brake fluid as a penetrant,much better than the spray can stuff.

Before you go and do the big ezy out thing, I broke an exhaust stud on my Disco, and stange as it may seem, it just screwed out without the use of force. Yours may also. I used a hobby engraver with a small cutting disk to make a slot across the top of the stud suitable for a screwdriver, and then just screwed it out. (After removing the manifold of course).

If that don't work, then at least you haven't gone backward. You can use the engraver to make a pilot hole for the drill.

If you do have to use an ezy out, try the US square type. I've had nothing but horrors with the spiral type.

ps: M8 HT bolts are widely available, but not as flanged head bolts like the LR originals. Use a HD washer

Thanks guys. I still have to get the replacement studs. At least the second one is only broken at the end so there is heaps to het hold of.

I did three on mine a few years ago could not get them out with easy outs,
if you have to drill it out bolt the manifold back on this will act as a guide and get a heli coil kit alloy heads are a pain when it comes to removing studs. I have gas cut them out of cast iron heads.

Another thing to do is drill the manifold stud holes out about 1 mm especailly the ones on the end if you look inside the bolt holes you can see where the manifold pushes against the stud breaking it.

Do not use brass nuts as they come loose the LR nuts have serrations on the bottom of the nut this stops them coming loose I used nuts from repco they came loose in a week bought the LR ones no probs after that

Ezy-outs are B******s of things and will often make the job worse. If they snap off, you're up the creek.
Believe it or not, there are actually left hand "thread" drill bits available, that you drill with the drill in reverse. The drill either cleanly drills the hole you wanted in the first place, or more often bites into the stud and unscrews it! So easy. Once the broken stud comes out, put it in a vice and run the drill forward to release the drill bit.
They are called Pow-'Er-Outs and I bought by mail order from Kross Threds (02) 4962 2875 or 1800 025 500

Easy outs are a pain in the butt. I broke 3 off inside a stud trying to get one out.

If you going to use them, Use the biggest one you can.

there are better tools then that to remove them. If you have amig welder, then try welding a bolt onto the stud

Other then that. There are guys who do it for a living. I have a friend who had the guy come out and replace all his studs for $80

just look in the yellow pages or ring around

Got three new studs and nuts from landrover today $20 8O and thats below the recommended price!
I will be removing the manifold to see if I can remove them easily. If not then bolt manifold on with old gasget and drive it into town to have a guy remove it for me.
