Ok, i know this is already in general ,but will post here anyway, after spending all day friday under the bonnet of thumper ,i have it stripped down to the block, and it seems that the head gaskets have indeed gone west
On inspection of the block ,now that all the paraphernalia is out of the way, i can now read the engine numbers, there are two sets of numbers, the first reads thus

CR8:13.1

does this represent the Compression Ratio???

and after reading the engine number, i seriously thought of removing the motor,

a 4 litre would be either a 42D or 44D depending on compression:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>
4.0 Litre, New Range Rover
42D 9.34:1 CR EFi (GEMS) Sept 1994 onwards
44D 8.12:1 CR Efi (GEMS) Sept 1994 onwards

4.6 Litre, New Range Rover
46D 9.34:1 CR EFi (GEMS) Sept 1994 onwards
48D 8.12:1 CR EFi (GEMS) Sept 1994 onwards
[/b][/quote]

I hope this has not burst your bubble, 3.5 thick web block is still the best motor to start with for LOTS of power https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

and the build dates are for the engine and not the car - these can vary quite a bit!!!

Hey Ferno,

you may find that the number is SALLHAML7CA167984

as the L mean 3.5 V8 EFI?

Is yours an EFI?
