td5 Not starting, please help!

Gday Guys,

So, my brother and I both have 1999 td5 Defenders, both in various states of disrepair. Except his has recently died in the arse.

It became slow to start over a long time and then recently fuel pump became inaudible and starting very difficult: no problem, replaced fuel pump.

Started once then promptly stopped starting.

No problem, must be the injector seals. Replaced o-rings and washers on injectors. Still no start. Commenced actual fault finding and determined that the Glow Plug relay was not working so replaced that.

Still no start. I noticed that there is a hissing sound coming from the FPR.

Now being the good aulro citizen I am I used the search function and checked the good oil. The results there lead me to say it should be the FPR or the Crank Position Sensor.

I think it's the FPR, but before we drop any more money I would be interested to know everyones thoughts.

Any other things I should check or look at?

There is a very good Landrover Toolbox video on youtube where the guy walks through troubleshooting a non starter TD5. He went through it very systematically. Do you get any error codes? The only thing other that the crank angle sensor, I can think of is bleeding the fuel system.

From your info it just needs a good purge and ensure a full charged battery.

Just confirming that you have bled it?? Depress the throttle pedal 10 times quickly in succession the engine management light will come on the fuel pump will start then go and make a coffee.

If you are still getting air through the regulator maybe there is an issue with it
The cheap way is to buy a repair kit just make sure it has the actual regulator part some are just expensive O rings there is a guy who sells them on ebay from Tasmania.

Make sure there isn't a second seal on the fuel filter sometimes when people change the filter they inadvertently leave the seal in place the end result is 2 seals and air sucking causing your symptoms.
There can be issues in the fuel filter block with a membrane that can block causing hard starting but not NO starting.
The CPS fault will be visible with a Nanocom on a Defender TD5 check the plug and wiring on the CPS as they can get damaged as can the harness resulting in issues.
Make sure the collision sensor on the top of the firewall hasnt been knocked resulting in no go. (just push it to reset it)

I had an issue with the fuel pump relay wiring under the drivers seat mine is the yellow relay toward the back of the car the wiring was burnt and not connecting your could also swap the relay around with one of the others to see if that resolves any poor fuel pump performance.

I have also read about dirty signals associated with the starter motor that upset the CPS resulting in no starting
If the vehicle is bled then it should push start if this is the issue.
Dont fuss about glow plugs in Darwin they are irrelevant

Make sure the battery is fully charged

Not all this is entirely relevant but are things to look over while diagnosing the issues

Also, from my experience, the air bleed valve in the fuel filter housing can cause non-starting issues and they are cheap to replace.

Hey guys thankyou for all your replies. We are really busy through the week so we're going to have to tackle it on the weekend.

I really wanted to make sure we were covering all of the 'idiot switches' so to speak. We've carried out the priming sequence about a million times so as they say to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results is mad.

Ill keep rewatching these Land Rover Toolbox videos and update this thread as we go.

Always check that the negative lead from the engine to the battery is fault free. I have doubled mine to be sure.
