Took my son to the Tractor Pulls at Wakefield Park (Goulburn) yesterday, I hadn't seen them since the early 80s when I was working in Dubbo, anyway something different for the day.

Hi Bushie,

The last tractor I drove was 30 years ago: a grey Massey Ferguson

What is the aim: the fastest over a quarter mile with a plough on the back?

As best I can gather (missed the start when they probably explained the rules) the trailer they tow has wheels at rear and flat plate skid at front, as they go down the track (~100m) a weight is moved forwards over the skid until they either run out of power or traction. If they make the 100m the wight is increased for subsequent runs. Yester day the small tractors had around 1000 kg sitting on the skid the larger ones up to 5200kg.

Last time I saw a tractor pull it was at a Land Rover exhibition in Victoria about 20 years ago. It was great and after the competition had ended any jo blog and his 4x4 could line up for an attempt. Great day https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I think this was when Land Rover bought out the new look 110 and Defenders. There where mud running course hill clime and the tractor pull.
Also a test track to take prospective buyers around to let them feel how it travelled on 4x4 terrain.

I don't think that speed matters in these comps.

What is really funny in the tractor pukks is to see the tractors struggling to pull these trailers, and an old traction engine just huffed and puffed and hauled it the whole way https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Traction and Torque - Its about all that matters.

Great pics, but like all racing the vehicles stop resembling what there supposed to be....the only thing tractor is the wheels.

Cheers
