anderson plug straight to the battery

Ray, get someone to put in a dual battery controller, suggest http://www.traxide.com.au/trax1sc40_2.html (AULRO Member discount https://www.aulro.com/afvb/) and then run a cable from the controller to a anderson plug and connect the deep cycle battery up to that, easy.

then later on you can put in the solar panels etc https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ more $$$$$

what do u plan on running off the battery and how long for without recharge ??

Matt.

Hi hiline, what exactly are you trying to do. Do you have a second battery in in the caravan or do you just want to connect power to the van from your vehicle’s battery. :?:

Cheers.

drivesafe....... the van has its own battery

my car only has 1 battery

so i'm told i need a hot wire to run and charge the van battery while i'm driving.............

Done. Now I know what you want.

You will need to run both a positive and a negative cable of at least 10mm2 from you front battery, through a dual battery charge controller ( and naturally I would recommend mine ) and a circuit breaker at the front, to the caravan and another circuit breaker at the battery in the caravan.

To allow you to easily connect and disconnect the van a you need it, use 50 amp Anderson Plugs ( part N# SB50 ).

Running the cable through the vehicle is a BIG job but there is no reason you can’t do it yourself.

There is a lot more to it than this but this will give you an idea and if you want more info just ask and I’ll go through each step and explain why it should be done a given way as you need it.

Cheers.

How soon do you need to do your “HOT WIRE” as I have to do a similar set up for Steinzy so you can follow and ask any questions as we go.

I also have a caravan but we have a solar panel on the roof which charges the battery as part of its role.

When we are in Caravan parks the battery is charged when plugged into the mains.

This enables us to also go offroad and still have lights in the caravan at all times.

A further option I had fitted is another solar panel connection to run the engel through the caravan deep cycle battery.

Neither of these options may be of interest but they work for me.

As drivesafe knows I don't always choose the best people to help me with battery options  but the ones relating to the caravan were installed at the time I bought the caravan and the installer knew exactly what I wanted to do and in the 6 years I have run this rig it hasn't let me down

hiline

the van i bought already has a solor wire connected

just need a panel and away i go https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

how good are the panels ???

and what price are they ??

The problem Harryw is not that you choose the wrong people deliberately, far from it and a problem that faces most people who know nothing about vehicle electric's, you went to a 4x4 chain store thinking that you were going to experts and they should have been.

The problem in your case is that ARB should have made sure the the franchisee either was qualified to do this type of work or made it clear to the franchisee, he should refer the installation on to professionals.

ARB have corrected the fouled up installation which is to their credit but it should not have happened in the first place and I wonder how many other vehicles are running around with the wrong set up.

Harryw you did the right thing and it’s in no way your fault that you ended up with what you did.

Cheers and as posted, just glad that all is well now.

Hi hiline, before buying solar panels, make sure you actually need them and will get adequate use out of them to justify their cost.

Depending on your intended use, an additional battery usually can give you more operating time for a much lower cost.

i already have a spare battery i take with me camping
to run 12v lights and stuff

then once i get home i re-charge it

just was wondering how good the solar panels where...........

DEFENDERZOOK
9th February 2006, 04:26 PM
its how expensive solar panels are you should be asking....

but with a panel or two on top ov the van you can leave the battery in there permanently.....
and if its parked out in the sun....the battery will always be charged.....

and if you do mount panels on a van or roof rack.....a good tip is:

try and mount them on a removable frame that can be removed and left out in the sun.....
so your rig or van can be in the shade.......

I've got the SC80 from Drivesafe in My D3. Charges a 2nd Battery in the D3 as well as the battery in the Coromal Camper.

Followed Drivesafe's advice and used Anderson plugs to connect the Car to the Camper.

Looked easy to install, but still will have an Auto Electrician mate install it for me.

Haven't looked into solar yet, but have found the wiring in the Coromal Camper ready for solar connection. Might be an option one day.
