I have a squealing noice similar to a loose fanbelt coming from the engine bay, it only happens when you first move off after starting the car in the morning, and in the afternoon after it has sat all day at work.
I'm at a lose as to what it could be seeing as it has an automatic belt tensioner and i've inspected the belt and it seems OK.
Any ideas people, oh it's a TD5.

It will either be something like oil dripping onto the fan belt, or in the case of mine a broken exhaust manifold stud.
when the manifold/gasket was cool it woudl squeal intial, but once it got hot it would seal up an not squeal.
It would happen in situations like you said, or even after having the car idle for a period of time at stop lights etc
In my case the manifold studs that snapped were the ones right at the front of the engine so it sounded like a slipping belt/whistle

when the studs broke on the exhaust manifold it sounded like a fan belt
squeal,so check the studs and if broken there is another thread that has
just been started, also it could be a dry bearing on the belt tensioner remove the belt and see if the noise goes away.

Hi Redback
Mine does that, and only first move in the morning, pretty sure mine is a thrust bearing in the clutch

Have you got alot of travel in the clutch pedal before you get resistance.

My Rangie used to do it if one of the batteries had drained and the alternator was underload from start up. When the electrical fault was found and fixed the squealing stopped. Realy wired up arse about by previous owner.

Our disco2 does the same, & when I turn the Air-con off, it stops. So I am assuming it is a problem bearing in the a/c compressor. Havn't had it looked at yet as it doesn't always happen, & when it does I turn the a/c off for a couple minutes & then turn it back on & it seems fine.
Hope this helps

The thing is the squealing only happens when accellerating away from a stationary position then stops by the time i get to 3rd gear, and doesn't happen at all after that.
Only returns if vehicle has been parked for a long period.

Water pump bearing will also do that.

One way to check to see if it is an exhaust manfild leak is to see if you can spot any exhaust emmision around the head ( black carbon ) or when it sqeals, so if you can see any exhaust plume.
Get someone to start and rev your engine whilst you watch the manifold and see if there is any noticable plume. Thats how I spotted what my sqeal was

Well i checked the Disco today pulled the heat shield off (that 3rd bolt who thunk of that setup  ) and had a good look (i'm looking for an oil leak as well) and low and behold i found a broken exhaust manifold stud on No1 cylinder it's leaking from No4 as well but the studs are OK, so squealing noise solved.
Thanks all for your help, Baz.
