View Full Version : 12V Power location on Puma?

Hello all,
I'm helping a friend wire up some daylight running lights on his 2014, Puma. What are your suggestions (& location) for me to power the lights from so they turn on with the start of the vehicle? I have a TD5 so I am not as familiar with the TDCI's layout.
I tried a reasonably easily accessible source off of the alternator, but that is a 12v constant, and so powers the lights even with the vehicle off. The Puma engine bay appears to be more tightly packed than my TD5, so any access tips would be appreciated.

Thank you,

I gave up looking in the engine bay of my Puma and went from the back of the cig lighter in the dash.
Mine's a 2014MY also, so should be the same.

Undo the bolts (torx I think) holding the centre dash panel on and then I used plastic bicycle tyre repair levers to gently pull the dash panel off far enough to get behind the cig lighter.
From the back of the cig lighter you can route the new 12V wire behind the rest of the dash high up into the passenger footwell.
In the engine bay on the LH of the firewall above the passenger footwell, you should see a rubber grommet/bung arrangement with some spare 'nipples' on it and if you carefully cut the end of one of these nipples, you can see the the other side of this bung in the passenger footwell.
Feed your new wire through this bung and then out to wherever you want into the engine bay.

Depending on specification of the model
You may find an unused ignition switches circuit in the underdash fuse box
I have taken an ign switched and constant live from the fuse box and fed them to the engine bay

Thank you both! This will surely get-er-dun.

DRLs legally should turn off when park lights go on, so a changeover relay to break the earth when the parkers are live would be my recommendation.

I wonder whether this makes it more likely to blow the fuse for that connection. Do you think this could become an issue ?

DRLs draw very little power, so shouldn't be a problem.

DRLs legally should turn off when park lights go on, so a changeover relay to break the earth when the parkers are live would be my recommendation.

You can also use a DRL controller which dims the DRLs by 30% when the lights are on.
We’ve had some strange issues with DRL controllers on Pumas. Controllers are normally wired directly to the battery, but if done this way on a Puma, for some reason the DRLs won’t turn off automatically like they should , but if wired to the cigarette lighter they’re fine and work as they should. BUT, I had one recently which was the other way around and only worked correctly wired to the battery.
I suggest, if using a controller, first try running some loose cable to the battery and test operation before permanently wiring them in.

Cheers Murray

Thank you again for all the advice......

It looks like I am going to dodge the competing circuit issue of DRL's, and parking lights. The kit that my friend purchased is an either or. To explain, the halo-LED-DRL could either be slaved into the parking light circuit to just come on with the parking lights, or it could be on its own (single wire coming directly from DRL).

He wants to have the halo on with ignition, so I am going to disconnect it from the parking lights circuit and run it to a 12V ignition (fused).

I'm not 100% up on DRL legalities but the benefits
Of halo over seperate lights will be once main beams are on
The DRL will not be really noticeable

With regards to ign power if you do the
Piggy backing fuse15 makes sense as a lighting source of ign power
As I presume you'll be running LED main beams overall load on that circuit and switches will be reduced giving plenty of capacity for the DRL

Another thought, which may or may not be helpful.
There is a cigarette plug in the rear just inside the rear door on the passenger side. If you could find where it picks up the power (I haven't traced it back, so I'm not sure), and it is not behind the dash, then you may avoid having to pull the dash apart. Just a thought.
Another option might be to pick up the power at the alternator? My lightbar gets its power there.
Just another thought.

Trigger relay from the plug at the heater under bonnet, and supply from starter or battery direct.

Thank you,

On my D2 Td5 i will use an “add a fuse” to pick up 12v from the ECM fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. This will switch a relay to power the running lights direct from the cranking battery.
