Honest to goodness fuel economy V8 disco (non dissy, coil pack type)

As above title, my Son is looking to buy a V8 auto Disco with the 4.0L type motor with the coil pack system (as opposed to the old single coil and dissy setup.

I have seen wildly different claims for fuel economy everything from 10L/100klm to up near 30l/100KLM.
I had a 93 Disco with a 4L. cross bolt main engine, but with a 3.5/3.9 fuel injection system with single coil and dissy, on a good day I would get around 22l/100klm out of it.

So can anyone give me an honest appraisal of the 4L/4.6L from personal experience on Fuel Economy, L/100klms., and do these engines (Thor/Gems or whatever they are called) come in the D1 and or D2, thanks, Regards Frank.

I cannot speak to a Thor 4.0/4.6 but I would say your 93 D1 had major issues. I had a 3.9 D1 and I would get around 14l/100km cruising on the highway, 17 around town and 22 offroad. I had the car for 12 years and recorded fuel consumption for the entire time I had it - of course in specific circumstances it would give better or worse but the average is sort of what it averaged out.

Now my current 101 with a 3.5 gives 22 on the highway and I can do better if I go slower so your 22 average indicates that you had major issues somewhere.

Oh - very early D1 3.5s had flapper injection, the 3.9 D1s had 14CUX and the 4.0 D2s had Thor - no Gems either. Gems was fitted to earlier P38 4.0/4.6 engines and later these came with the Thor system.

anywhere around 15 is considered quite good,,
you wont get anything like that around town,,
and shouldnt expect to,,,

Frank some of the variances you have been seeing in d2s is due to low compression (99 to 01) vs high compression (01 to end of model). The low comp is 8.23:1 and high comp 9.3:1 or thereabouts. It makes a big difference in driveability and efficiency.

I have the high compression 4l V8 in my D2a and I usually get about 15/100 on long trips But whenever I go anywhere I am pretty well loaded up and I tow a boat as well.
Around town and beach driving I really don't Want to know how much juice I use, But it is significantly more than 15/100 [bigwhistle]
The TD5 is a far more economical engine But the V8 is Sooo much nicer to drive [bigrolf]

Pat my 95 D1 3.9 auto with over 300k on it gets 19l/100k around town and in the same conditions my 4.6d2 manual gets 14.5 to 15. Very consistent. The d2 gets 13.5 to 14 on the highway. It's heavy with 31 inch Duratracs and lift etc.
