Given the difficulty of reassembling a steering relay due to the strength of the spring, has anyone wondered about using a lower strength spring ?. I mean does the spring really have to be that strong ? It's there to keep the bushes in place -.right ?

Any thoughts ?

I just used big cable ties. Pulling tight bit by bit, until I could fit the bushes. Two hose clamps.
See my post, Gilbert.

If u use a weaker spring u will have a very sloppy steering relay especially when u load it up during use.

Thanks guys for the feedback, point taken I'll persist with it.

I was trying the cable tie approach, compressing the spring in the vice, then using 300mm x 4.8mm plastic cable ties with 22kg breaking strain, but I haven't quite managed to get it all together yet. The cable ties sometimes slip around, or break.

What size cable ties are recommended ?

I even tried stainless cable ties as they have 56kg braking strain, but I couldn't get them tight enough.

whitehillbilly, thanks for the pointer to your post, I found it.

Cheers,
John

I never had any break, but they did slip around a bit. I used 8, 4 compressing 3 or 4 inner coils, before doing the outer ones.
Make sure you add the spring washers. I had to pull apart and re do mine.

Ha, yeah I noticed in your pics that you had the spring washers in the wrong place.

Thanks for the tip about using more cable ties, I check your pics again. I might have more questions yet.
