Photo Comp #37- 'Camp Fires' '- Ends 1st October, voting ends 5th October.
Welcome back to the camera corner competition.

Anyone can join in this competition and although labeled a competition there is no prize to be won! The idea being that everyone and anyone can join in you dont have to be a proffesional or have fancy equipment....you just need a digital camera, a keen eye, be able to interprate the set topic, imagination and enthusiasm to get out and use your camera.

The Competition is fortnightly and will go from Sun to Sun......the first week is dedicated to uploading your photo. each person entering may only upload 1 photo if anymore than 1 has been entered your first will be taken and your others will be deleted so think carefully about the one you want to submit.
When the first week is over the thread will be locked and a new thread started where you can place your vote by posting the name of the member of which the picture you like the most. The voting will be open until Thursday evening and then the winner will be announced. the winner then has Fri to Sun to come up with the new topic and any rules for the next competition. The idea being that we don't do subjects such as weddings or sport but topics, statements or descriptions that sort of thing....the sort of thing that can be left open to interpretation and imagination.
(Dullbird, 30.11.2008)

So this comp starts now

The statement for this competition is:
"Camp Fires"

Gee, I have some work to do now - I've got an old pic somewhere - an actual photo, from some years ago which I've always liked. Got no idea where it is though...

Well found one pic from the ones I took that night a looong time ago.

This was taken at Makarora on the West Coast of NZ back in 1990. Not the best pic I took that night by any means, but a fantastic evening. I did get a better one with a really nice long exposure without anyone moving but I can't find it - it might be in an album somewhere. If I find it in time I'll put it up.

Tuff Truck 2017.
About 4 tonne of railway sleepers. Built with a bobcat.
The people pictured were about as close as one could safely be...

We camped at Roaring Meg Falls whilst heading south on the CREB track on the way home from Cape York.
At dusk we heard crackling and saw a glow through the rainforest...an out of control fire was heading our way. Didn't have to light a camp fire....Already had the biggest camp fire Possible.

Not the greatest fire but a cracking shot of the disco from Moreton Island.

I always call the campfire the "Bush TV" because every time I light one up I can't stop staring at it [biggrin]
Loving the images.

Not as big as some others.....but its not the size that counts rather how you use it. Isnt that what they say or am i just trying to convince myself thats a true statement?[emoji85] [emoji2] [emoji4] https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/09/1086.jpg

Is there 1 or two fires in that shot? It looks like a reflection of a fire in a vehicle?

austag
3rd October 2017, 07:39 AM
Hi Mitch
it's 2 fires. The one in the background is the cooking fire pit, the big fire is the lounge room TV (LOL) and the white light is just the around the car lighting.

With sixteen interesting and varied entries I understand that voting for just one is difficult.

BTW, voting is open to all AULRO members, you don't have to have posted an entry to be eligible to vote.

However you only have until 9pm tonight (AULRO Time) to post your vote so don't delay any longer.

My suggestion for the topic for next competition is:
"The Power of Nature"

If anyone is curious about some of the technical details of my campfire photo, I used a technique similar to the way flash photos used to be taken.
None of us would be old enough to remember it, but we have seen images of photographers using a small tray of magnesium powder which burned very quickly to provide a flash of light.
I didn't use magnesium powder. I used dry bracken fern.
I set the shutter speed to 30 seconds, walked back to my seat and threw a handful of bracken on the fire.
It took me about three attempts to get the right amount of bracken to provide the amount of light that I wanted. :)
