We were at our usual HSV Owners Club "pre Bathurst" visit to the race team workshop last night, where we were addressed by amongst others, co-driver Jack Perkins, who when questioned as to what his Dad was doing these days, mentioned that He was mucking around with a few old Land Rovers, he mentioned a Series 1 with a grey motor in it. Presumably these would be on the family property at Cowangie,....anybody have any info on this?

larry recently did a rebuild on a series motor. You don't see him looking "absolutely delighted" very often.

check out the video in the Perkins Engineering Facebook page.

If you look on Facebook under "Perkins Engineering" - he has a video on there...

LP in his element today. His latest project is restoring a couple of vintage old Land Rovers. This is the first engine for one of the vehicles. He has completely rebuilt it, sourcing new parts from all around the world, and it hasn't been running for 57 years! Here's the first touch on the starter button !!

For his next trick, Larry'll be fitting a Signature 750 to a Defender. :burnrubber::eek2::TakeABow:

During my working career, when I had one of the most enjoyable periods of my career, dealing with
"Truckies", I became quite familiar with the various powertrains, ....but nothing around the "750" number, so is that the top H.P. of the latest Cummins?

I'm hoping he'll be at Sandown in a couple of weeks so I can have a word with him,, but I might get lucky and see him at a mates place sooner. They're best buddies, so if he's there, it'll be good to hear exactly what he's doing.

Late one day, early October 1993 and 1995 he looked absolutely delighted 😉

Earlier one of those days he wasn't to delighted with a young Loundes.[bigsad]

Not officially, but there are codes out there been written that give a Signature a few more ponies. There is an 1,100 HP code I've seen written and used in a racing truck, nothing else required but a laptop to double a standard Signatures horsepower - although it reduces its lifespan from more than 1,000,000KM to around 500KM (if you're lucky) :D

750HP codes are quite common and I know of more than one owner/operator that does linehaul up the Hume running 750HP Signatures.

Without incriminating myself, it's a tad scary being in a fully loaded B Double doing 140...

I met Larry in Alice a few years ago.
Larry is one of a handful of drivers in my favourites list.

I saw a lovely yellow/orange D.C. Unimog and had to speak to the driver.
I was so interested in the Mog I didn't realise why the face in the cab was familiar.
Introduced my self as did he (first names) Had a bit of a chinwag about the Mog and where he could get some thing (can't recall what it was) in Alice.
I even asked what he did for a living to which he responded that he ran an engineering company.
Dummy here still slow to join the dots.
Anyway later in the day a mate called saying he had seen Larry Perkins in town and the penny dropped.[emoji122]
I know it's got little to do with the main topic but thought I'd share the anecdote.

right injectors and a larger turbo with a std 425hp program will put 700-800hp on the ground with a pre acert c15.
banging codes in will work but will effect cooling much more then building for it.

would of been interesting to see what larry could of done with simerler funding to hrt

Agreed, building for the HP is far better but much more to me consuming, so I think that's why codes make such good money. They also fudge the road speed so another bonus for the operator that doesn't care much for the law - not condoning that, but it happens way too much.

Absolutely! I remember as a young flaggy watching him freakin detonate at Amaroo when the pit lane shut on him. He's been my favourite driver ever since (seriously)! :lol2:

Not only an experienced driver, raced overseas, etc, but had great engineering talents.

His team was the first to run Bathurst on one set of brake pads.

Then they changed the rules.

They also ran the Holden v8,and won against the others with the newer Chevs.

Straight shooter, didn't hold back, which was great.

What i find interesting is the sons of those great racers of that era, didn't do anywhere near as well as their fathers.

Think Richards,Johnson,Perkins,Brock(stepson),and others.

Don't forget Surfers and Lakeside.

Was involved with the HQs and Prody Cars and only got to Lakeside a couples of times and never to Surfers. We were based in western Sydney ATT so Oran Park (and then Eastern Creek) was the home track. I worked at Quakers Hill and Amaroo was nice and close. We were at the final meet at Amaroo, strangly very emotional.

Dug out some nostalgia. My old XE dragging the 626 back from (IIRC) the trip to Lakeside.

The things I love about him. Being the engineer, he was also one of the last to move to centre lock nuts.

That last series Holden V8 was an interesting one. He worked the rules over really well, no doubt a ruthless trait learnt in F1. Not allowed to fill the ports in the heads, but you could remove material. I assume this was to allow porting but not reshaping. Those last V8s had caps bolted (iirc) inside the inlet ports to smooth out the flow... and win Bathurst.

Really good point about the sons of the greats. Steven Richards has been the only one who has been able to hold his own career as a noted driver.

I only was a spectator at SP, but used to flag at Lakeside (when it was in the scrub).

Really good point about the sons of the greats. Steven Richards has been the only one who has been able to hold his own career as a noted driver. To increase torque he raised the floor of the inlet ports (reduces cross sectional area, increases gas velocity) with bolt in pieces as material wasn't allowed to be added, e.g. Epoxy or welding.
Creative thinking at its best to circumvent a rule.

An old friend of mine who helped me a lot knew him well as he ran Brian Callaghan and Barry Graham's cars and bought bits plus engines from him.
Many, many stories there.

That Holden that he qualified on pole at Sandown was a hand grenade built just to do that.
Paul asked how many revs he was pulling (the Holden wasn't rev limited like the new Chev and Ford) and Larry wouldn't say exactly, but it was upwards of 9000 and scrap afterwards.

Didn't know that re the qualifying motor! Was that the same for Bathurst?

Have a look at the vehicles in the background[bighmmm]
