I'm looking for a cheapish 4wd <10k. I like the county as it's cheaper and has a v8, although I like the idea of a ute which means defender. Are there any other differences between the county and defender other than engines and body styles?

Whilst I'm also interested, it's a matter of first-in, first-served. If it's what you want, grab it. You could convert this to a truck cab pickup.
My preference is for a station wagon, that's why I haven't already bought it!
Alternatively, if you prefer a V8, I have my V8 County station wagon for sale.

Thanks Ron, but converting something isn't really an option as I just don't have the time. I'll bear your county in mind but I'm in Qld so I'll be trying to find one locally first.

Yep - understood. I imagine that converting a hardtop wouldn't be very difficult. You'd need a tailgate and a cab roof; probably not much more.

possibly all someone else might need, but according to the 'to do' list in front of me I'd need a new kitchen, two bathrooms, a job, tailgate and cab roof

thought i'd bump this back to the top - any thoughts on difference between the defender and county other than age and engines?

Drum rear brakes and non-ventilated disc brakes on the front. A lot slower to stop than a Defender and well known for being spongy.
Slightly more leg room due to doors that aren't as wide/deep.
Funky recessed door handles and weird door locks.

Pre-Defender 110s are not all Countys - they came in ute , hard top and cab/chassis (two wheelbases) as well as the County, plus, of course the 6x6, which is not the same as the military one, although mechanically similar.
Having said that, the major differences apart from the engines are the doors - as Simon says, they are thinner and hence more room (the Defender has the seats moved inboard compared to earlier 110s, and also has a smaller steering wheel to allow more elbow room with the thicker door), but the doors are poorly designed compared to the later ones, and tend to rattle. The other major difference is that the pre-Defender 110s have the steel body capping galvanised, so rust is less likely there. There are many relatively minor differences, but they add up to a lot of differences, and while some of the earlier features may be better than the newer replacements, in many cases the parts for the newer item are easier to get and cheaper.
The drum/disc brakes are quite good if looked after, but many need major work by now. The drum rear brakes need regular adjustment - unlike discs, they are not self-adjusting, and particularly if loaded, the rear brakes do a lot of the braking, so you will notice if they are not adjusted properly.
The five speed gearboxes do not stand up very well to the Isuzu motor, so if looking at that rather than the V8, avoid the five speed box.
The major problem with the older 110s is that the newest of them is at least sixteen years old, and has probably done at least 200,000kms, and probably is on its third or fourth owner - although if you find one either well maintained or low mileage or both, it may be very good value indeed. And even if it needs quite a bit of work, particularly if you can do the work yourself, it may be so cheap that it is worth it. Mine has done about 410,000kms, and I am looking at overhauling the engine in the next year or two, which will cost a fair bit, but will still be ahead compared to, say, a mid nineties Defender. While the engine is out I will pull the body off mainly to repaint the chassis, which is getting very stone blasted, and do anything else that looks like it needs doing, probably repaint the panels while off.

Forgot to mention the 120" Australian special, 10" extension to chassis, special extra long rear prop shaft. Great, great, great. Replacing the prop shaft cost some, I was quoted $750.
Isuzu 3.9, 4 speed lt95.
8' x 6' steel tray.
Why did I ever let it go? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Cheers
Simon.

I understand early 110s have stronger CVs than do Defenders.

$5500, 249,000 km. Long Range tank, bull bar, side steps (factory heavy duty steel), motor overhauled by previous owner not too long before I bought it (km-wise), ditto with radiator recore, reasonably new tyres - about 5,000km on Goodyear Wrangler AT/R.
I'm the third owner: the first was Jaguar Rover Australia (maybe a company car) and servided by JRA at Moorbank. My ex-colleague bought it when it was about 18 months old and sold it to me last year when he bought a Disco. He knew I had always liked his 110.
