Hey all https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

You know how when you buy a new vehicle you start seeing them all over the place? It's not that there are suddenly any more of them on the roads - maybe it's just that you are paying attention to their presence in particular when all other cars on the road are just a blur.

Well - to me that theory is out the window. A week after buying our Defender TD5 I've only seen ONE other one on the road. I don't live in a backwater - I travel the M5 in Sydney every day and see tens of thousands of cars between Appin/Campbelltown and Pyrmont.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen more - but delighted at the same time. It's nice to have a fairly unique vehicle for once.

By the way - the one other Defender I saw was going the other way near the Fairford Road exit and DID wave! How nice that is https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I spent four years out at Richmond. During that time I seen a few, but they definetely aren't a popular vehicle for Sydney!

And if you don't wave to another Defender - you're going straight to hell!

The reason you dont see many in Sydney is because they have to drive to Melbourne or Brisbane to do a U turn. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

They only sell 350 a year... that's a tiny number compared to most other vehicles. Consider yourself either...

A) Silly enough to be conned into buying one
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ Smart enough to appreciate a real 4wd

Even rarer is the 90. I red in a LROI magazine that when there were on sale here in oz over 03/04 and possibly some of 05 (I can't remember), Landrover only sold 43 of them. So, if you see one of them around they are more unique than many $200k + cars.

to true, trust me im trying to buy one. ive found 5 since late december
and they have all sold within days of being listed!

all of them bar the tassie one have sold for no less than 32G.
so if LRA got off its butt and bring some into the country and sell
them for 34-35G they would be ordering another batch quick!

heres one for ya. quote from LRA re D90's.
LRA. if you can get 11 people who want D90's we'll take a small
deposit from each of you and import them!

Hi all,

me and my td5 90 just move to sydney from melbourne. i have found the defenders are not really suitable for sydney traffic condition.

1. lack of power to keep up everyday sydney traffic
2. air conditioning system is not powerful enough in sydney's weather (i have just moved for 3 weeks, 3 hot week)
3. i can't park in most of the car park, except the top lever parking of parramatta wetfielf
4. not possible to make a u-turn
5. hard to park on street (so tide)

in conculsion i can't go anywhere but OFFROAD~ therefore, i am going to explore some of the NSW offroad during this weekend..

cheers,

Greg

Fair go! you're driving a 90, start driving a 130 and you'll soon know about u-turns or lack thereof. A 90 is a bloody sports car!

There's more than a few 110's around here, and lots of other LRs too!

But this is the country, where a 110 belongs.

There was a nice old County from the mid eighties at a dealer a not so long ago, but at $8k, it was a bit rich.

Another dealer has had a 95 or 96 Disco diesel manual for about a year, $13K yahoo!

My favorite is a bloke who has a Series II LWB 2 door, refurbished with a very sweet sounding V8 and widened white original rims.

The 110 will come in handy when the seas rise, flooding much of Sydney.

Cheers, GQ

I have recently driven in Sydney in my elderly 110 - comments as follows.
1. I manage OK in Sydney traffic with a rather tired Isuzu pushing a 110 - a 90 with a TD5 should be plenty - if you want sports car performance get a sports car (mind you, my son, who drives a Kia Rio complains about the lack of power whenever he borrows the 110)
2. Landrover 90/110/Defender have always had lamentable aircon, butat least you can get decent ventilation.
3. Height restrictions ARE a problem in some areas.
4. I can make a U-turn most places in the 110, so you should be able to in the 90. And how often do you do U-turns anyway?
5. Not sure where the tide comes in, but the only problem I have had parking on the street in Sydney is finding a parking spot.

Yes to the air condtioning.

Try driving a 130 in the centre of Sydney.

And come to the Inner West. I know of at least six Defenders in Leichhardt and another half dozen in the close suburbs.

I must be blessed then,

Defender TD5 just up the street (within 200m of me) and 130 around 200m in the opposite direction. Also at least 2 90s seen regularly one silver one black.

Well... Jenny drove to work in it yesterday and saw ONE other. The other driver and passenger waved wildly (her words) and flashed lights.

They aren't very common down in southern Sydney so it seems!

Loving driving it around, except for the stiff clutch pedal. Not a bad daily driver apart from the slow acceleration off at the lights. No problems.... just adjusting to a slower world...... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Incidentally I filled up in that full service gas station in Norton street today, think its called J&M Motors (the one near Amato's).

Anywho's it only cost me 1.26 a litre for diesel , thats about 8-10 cents cheaper than anywhere else round here.

I asked the guy filling up and it turns out they have a really slow turnaround so on the last tanker they were well over and above anyone else but seeing as the price has shot up again they have become steadily cheaper to the point of stupidity.

Made me wonder why there wasnt a queue of diesel engines stacked up on the road!.

Anyway...if your quick you might be able to cash in,he did say that the tanker is due again for Monday at some point so you might have to be quick.

Im pretty sure they are closed Sundays as well.....

Yeah they do,

Most times though its usually on a very high premium to everything else out there, just on this occasion there slow turnaround time had paid dividends.

Just make sure you catch it before the tanker arrives on Monday!

p.s Im not good looking , Im a grumpy sarcastic old bald git most of the times.

don't know about 110 but we get a hell of a lot of looks from people when we are driving around in the 90.

Jeez, how many people from Leichhardt are there on here? I also live in Leichhardt(the forum) and have a mechanical workshop in Annandale.

I have been itching to get myself a 130 pick up but havn't found one in the rite price range as of yet. There are quiet a few around the area one nice one down near the Leichhardt pools/ hospital.

Like I said I am itching for one. Don't flame me for moving of the topic slightly but apart from the standard issue people have with aircon and making sure timing belts are reploaced on tdi300's what are things I should look out for when looking at them? Rust? accidient damage?

Cheers new member Alex.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>what are things I should look out for when looking at them? [/b][/quote]

130 HPCU's can crack the chassis right at the rear of the Crew cab. Check where a vertical gusset for the rearmost body/chassis mount is and check the rearmost gusset. Sometimes only the gusset starts to tear, but it can develop into a chassis rail crack. I've seen and heard of a few of them doing it, although I think I'm the only one on the forum that has experienced it.
General Defender things like the OE drive flanges and axle splines floging out. (usually only the rear :?) Characterised by slop and a big clunk in the driveline. Maxi drive flanges and axles fix that. (and converting the bearings to diff oil lubed). Bent steering arms are another common issue for anything used off road.
And just the usual Land Rover oil and water leaks and lack of dust sealing which we fob off as character  Otherwise, they are pretty straight forward. Mine is used as a daily driver/work vehicle and is caned and keeps coming back for more.

Oh, and the turning circle is atrocious.

I put this down to the fact that there are no decent pubs there.

Theres the Royal which is about as welcoming as a dose of clap in a brothel,or the Norton on Nortons which is a giant fishbowl with the allure of a wet t-shirt competition for the over 80's.

At least theres Amato's bottle shop which was my saving grace when moving from Pyrmont.

Sorry mate just mechanical repairs.

Never heard of the chassis having probs like that before. You have just slightly soured my taste for a 130. The scale is now tipping for a 110 wagon.

Alex, bear in mind that the ones I've heard of cracking have had hard working lives, eg Telstra use, or NT BFC use in my rigs case.
