TD5 Servicing frequency

Hi

I have an 02 TD5 Disco and did the last service at 36,000k in June 05 which included the aircon and was not cheap.

We now have done around 10,000K since that service and think I should consider getting it serviced again now, I have never owned a diesel before so have no knowledge of the special needs of this type of engine.

I seem to remember the techo at Barbagello's telling me the next service should be in 20,000K ,though I could be wrong.

At the back of my mind I have a nagging thought that the vehicle should be serviced twice a year because of potential injector problems. is this an urban myth or fact?

My main concern is that the vehicle will for the next year or two only do very local and limited mileage as it is only used by my wife to go to work and I reckon we will be lucky to do 5,000K per annum.

20 000km interval is what they recommend for the TD5, however if you do a bit of off road driving it is best to cut this interval a lot shorter. I take my car to ATV land rover in Sydney every 10 000k’s, and the do a great job. When I drove around Australia last year I took my car for a major service in Perth, the land rover dealer just north east of the city. Would not recommend them, they did not replace my oil filter and did not do all the little things they had checked of on the service form. This is not land rover just car dealers in general.

I have a plan which works out that you approx. halve the recommendations of LR. The half recommends are for oils & filter.

Change engine oil @ every 10,000 K's
Change centrifuge filter @ every 10,000 K's.
Change full flow filter @ every 30,000 K's.
Change diffs oils @ every 60,000 K's.
Change transfer oil @ every 80,000 K's. (LR recommended)
Change radiator water @ every 40,000 K's.
Change fuel filter @ 40,000 K's. (LR recommended) The water sensor is brittle and does not like to be removed & replaced. Also $130 each...you don't want to stuff it up each time you change the filter

It works out to be a bit more expensive but you know that it will last the distance and should not cause you any problems.


This was lifted from December '05. This is the service that I do on my Td5. Of course you or others may think differently but it works.

when i got quoted around $800 for a service from the stealer.....
i figure that if i service it 3 or four times a year i will be on par with just one of their services....
and i know what has been done and what hasnt.....</span>

I have it serviced every 10,000km. It may be ok to push it out to 20,000km if its only on the highway, but there is no chance in hell that I'd be doing that ever. I don't even think the best oils will run out to 20,000km personally, and 10,000km is about right for full synthetics in the TD5 before the breakdown. All IMHO though.

I agree with whats been said for service intervals. I've foolishly been getting the main stealer in to do my Td5 every 10000klms and am very dissatisfied with what was done.
The thought of oil in any engine of mine going for 20000 is just too much to bear.
Tried another "expert" and although I'm satisfied that everything was done according to the book, the price was excessive ($80 per hour) and included around $58 for sundries!
I paid it but won't be going back and will do my servicing in future as the warranty is nearly finished.
There's nothing there I can't do myself on basic servicing.
Very difficult to find a competent service centre, most mechanics are all wannabe Tojo mechanics to the exclusion of all else and the standard of workmanship on a Disco I had was disgusting and that was with a nation wide 4 x 4 so called experts!
Others purporting to be LR experts are known for their shonky workmanship and general rip off attitudes.
For serious probs. I'll get Kevin at Rover Tech in Bentley to have a look at it before I do anything at all.

Thanks for all the input and after giving it some thought I am going to get the oil changed in future at 6 months or 10,000K whichever comes first.

My motoring has dropped considerably since coming back to Perth so if we don't do a trip in the next year I can't see us doing 5000K and that would mean the oil could be there for 2 years before being replaced.

We bought the vehicle as a long term investment and if I need to "overservice" it on KM's travelled to keep it in top order then that is what I need to do.

The 20000k intervals are based on synthetic oils.Use mineral oils and you are looking at 5 to 10 thou intervals,and horrible black oil.

I will not be using synthetic hence the 6 month or 5000 K frequency.

I would,seeing the mess that comes out of"dirty Diesels" and clean ones useing synthetics.
I was speaking to an oil rep about synthetic oils.Carbon is one of the hardest compounds there is,the particles in an engine are very small and hard to filter,synthetic oils have a high Boron(pretty sure that was the one) content that trap the carbon and make the molecules larger and easy to filter out.He went on to add that some vehicles including Landrover(he didnt know I had one) have very effecient cyclone filters that will give you 20000k service intervals no probs.
The new Merc truck at work has 100000k(yep not a typo) interval as long as a full synthetic oil is used and oil sampling is done at 20000k intervals.

I have been quted $55 by www.Landrovers.com each, not as bad, but silly for a poorly made bit of plastic.

Harry I change my oil with synthetic every 5,000kms, oil and filters every 10,000kms, all other oils every 40,000kms or 2 years, coolant every 2 years. Most of the servicing is fairly straight forward and if you allow yourself a day at home it is ample time. I would only take it to the stealer for difficult items. Doing it yourseld you know it gets done and gets done properly. Just get the schedule off a Rave disc.
Overall the price of synthetic is a small cost in the long run. Having the sump off mine I have seen the benefits of synthetic. Nice clean bottom end.
