View Full Version : Trailer brake lights not working

Although my trailer plug is wired correctly, the brake lights on my trailer - and others I have towed - are not activated when I brake the car. The driving lights work and the indicators work but no brake lights.
Don't know much about electrics but can anyone suggest why this might be?

Thanks in advance, Mick

Mick if you send RAT a pm he will help, he is a sparky by trade and just as good with Landrover.

He logs on most nights

do the brake lights on the tow vehicle work....?

have you checked to see if the pin for the brake lights in the trailer socket
actually gets power when you press the brake lights....?
(use a multimeter or test light to check this....)

it may be as simple as a broken wire....or a blown fuse.....

let me know the answers and we then go to the next step......

Appreciate your help.

try it with a test light.....

if you dont have just go to the nearsest $2 shop and get one.....
or you nearest automotive store will have them.....

you can make one with a simple LED and a resistor.....

you need to find out if the trailer socket on the vehicle is getting power....
have a look behind the socket and see if you can see where the wiring from the sockets joins up with the vehicles wiring.......
and see if you can tell me how its connected....
eg soldered.....plugged in.....scotch locked......

Wire is connected directly to socket on the bumper - connected it myself and checked it out thoroughly before fitting back together. Didn't work before I re wired it either. Might try and get a test light to see if it is indeed getting any power, at least then I can work back.

Thanks again, Mick

I can't trace the wire back to where it plugs in and as I know next to nothing about car electircs and indeed where it should go back to, I can't even check for a loose wire at it's supposed source. All other lights seem to work so I may have to just hand it over to someone who knows electrics.

Appreciate your help though, Mick
