View Full Version : USB/5V power on right side of D4 dash

Just under a week into D4 ownership, with a few hundred km of highway and some rugged track behind me, I’m enjoying the feeling of settling in and thinking about how I want to set it up.

One thing that jumps out at me straight away is that I want 5V power or a USB power socket on the right side of the dash somewhere so that my phone can be powered/charged while it’s in its windscreen mount, in the corner where the dash meets the A pillar.

This weekend I did a trip to Girraween and Sundown national parks and learned that having a USB power adaptor in the central 12V socket and running cable up and over the steering column is not how I want to live. The cable is untidy and gets badly in the way of the TR and HR/LR controls.

So has anybody done something like this or got any tips about where to locate the socket and where to source the 12V supply from?

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/10/30.jpgRun the cable in the trim edge, across to the right under the steering column and then up to the phone. My mount is on the left of the instrument binnacle but the principal is the same and you can see in the photo that very little of the cable is visible. You don’t need to pull anything apart and the cable is close to invisible.

Scott, the 2010 layout is very different. I'm having trouble with my phone at the moment so can't easily post a pic. But the right-side 12V socket sits just below the high/low range buttons, and I'd like to not have anything coming out of that socket at all so it's not obscured.

So while I might end up going the route you suggested I'm still keen to have a power source somewhere to the right of the steering column.

This isn’t perfect, but it’ll do for a while. Thanks Scott... good advice as always.
