I've been driving modern cars with work so much I've forgotten if my Disco ('97 Tdi) has a little light that comes on to indicate if I'm in low range or if the centre diff lock is engaged. I'm being lazy because I can't find my owners manual but everything seems to be working when I engage, just can't see a light...

Yup. My Disco has a light that shows when the center diff is locked. The symbol looks like a birds eye view of the drive train.

No light when in low range but orange light with CDL locked.

The actuating mechanism can freeze up with lack of use causing the CDL to not activate - you need to test if it is or is not activating.

Yup!
Mine did that on my test drive, and owner I bought it from claimed he didn't know about the CDL(a bit of a worry for me) but that he said he'd never used it off road either.
A couple of drives back and forth moving the lever side to side to lock/unlock it, and eventually it came good, and little light for confirmation.

Oh, I dunno. When I was an Admin on RangeRovers.net, you'd be surprised how many people (umm, Americans) would ask how to put Rangies into 2WD.

I remember looking at the front axle assembly out of a Dodge RAM (I think) recently and noticed a 'bulge' in the long axle side near the diff. On asking what it was I was told that it was a clutch for disengaging one axle to put the vehicle into 2WD :o. From this I assumed two things. 1/. Yanks are crazy and 2/. Dodge RAM's don't have front LSD/lockers.
