View Full Version : GCLRO Fraser Trip - Logistics
Outlaw

For those unaware, we have a trip planned for 3 days to Fraser Island. Details are here: http://www.aulro.com/modules.php?name=Foru...=asc&highlight= (http://www.aulro.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7533&start=30&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)
For those who are aware, then you know this topic is to sort out the logistics of the trip... in particular, the camping side of it.
We seem to have around 15 cars coming with numerous passengers... my usual plan of attack is to make sure everyone is sufficient to a degree as we are camping on the oceanside of Fraser behind the dunes so will need to be completely self-sufficient... but on the other-hand, not everyone will want to go and purchase all the extra bits and pieces needed to achieve this.
Please post any thoughts you have on achieving total peace and harmony on Fraser Island https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I would suggest that we all send you a list of our camp gear and from that you can decide what essentials needs to be taken and how we will manage cooking, etc for the trip. Will involve a bit of work but that way we can take or leave the right equip for all our needs.
My 10 cents

Or alternatively, those who are not completely self sufficient, post here what you don't have and we can see what is needed to share https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Fair point....I don't have a toilet

Hmmm... I think we are mostly self sufficient. The main things I can think of that we might need is a toilet, and some kind of shower curtain. We have one of those solar shower thingies.

Okay so if we have a few ensuites between us we could be right... i know of 2 in our club going... also maybe a couple of those toilet seats on a stand that you tie a plastic bag under could be good for convenience https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

2 toilets - 15 groups/families
Does not make for great mathematics.
Do the open beach campsites have the toilets built by NPWS like they do at Inskip Point?
We are self sufficient for all camping gear except the aforementioned toilet. We have always used the bush method or the ones provided in camp areas.

Ok camping pro's, pro's/cons on tents canvas versus typical tent material. Coleman , Spinifex, Oztrail as a brand for tents and other bits and pieces. ie coleman for porta bbq/ Oztrail for Pop up Ensuite. Porta fridges/freezers and recommendations on what size one would need for a trip like Fraser or a bit longer ie a week say assuming packed with basic essentials? Thanks,

G'day Steve,
Tent size really depends on the number of people you are accomodating. You will never pack 4 people into a 4 person tent with all the gear.
We have a seven man coleman tent for my three boys and a 9'x12' southern cross for the missus and me. Its overkill but well worth it. We did 4 weeks in the southern cross for the five of us through the simpson and onto Alice and Uluru. Never again in one tent.
That said If you have a young family look a couple of sizes bigger than needs to allow for all the gear to be placed inside during the inevitable storm.
Tarps/poles sand pegs etc are all a good purchase but for your first outing you may be able to tag onto another campsite and use a communal tarp.
As to canvas type I've got both and the southern cross is heavy but will outlast me. The coleman is weatherproof and we got it for a song so it is value for money to me. Its much lighter, compact and generally foolproof to set up. Coloured poles into coloured sleeves. We've had other tents mostly dome ones that haven't lasted well. The new geodesic ones look good (more usable floor space) but were too expensive for the size for me.
I'll leave fridges to someone else I have a 40l Engel but I'm old school and the newer stuff may suit you better.
We use a large piece of shadecloth for the floor as the sand brushes off your feet before entering the tent. Also good for spills around camp compared to a tarp on the ground.
We have a coleman 2 burner LPG stove and a large 'Drifta' camp kitchen which is brilliant.
We built up our collection over the past 10 years and it has all lasted well.
My recommendation is buy the best quality you can afford but don't buy the gimmicky stuff stick to basic good quality gear.

Hey Stevo
I would agree with Coastie and buy quality and basic essentials and to reinforce what Louis said, I really think your best option is to go to a few stores with the likes of Louis and just look/discuss different items before you buy. I'll tag along too as you are nearby but this will save you a lot of grief and money longer term.
I have a large Colemen tent which is great but like everything, it has it's faults which you only find out about once you buy it and use it. Also have some cooking gear, tables etc and a whole raft of other stuff which I am only too happy to tell you about in a camp store where you can actually see what I am talking about.
Let me know if you want to do a tag along camp store visit with me and Louis and we'll keep you straight.
Aye, Mick

Hey all,
Went and did a recon at Anaconda on the weekend, luckily my other half was there otherwise it would of been a case of 'shhhhaaaacccchhhiinnggg", will check out BCF on Saturday when most of you are likely to be away down at Crystal Creek, and then most prob take Louis/Mick up on their assistance as I am likely to get carried away https://www.aulro.com/afvb/, then I will be permanently camping 8O .

I've got a chemical one which i think are good for long trips but for short stays is probably a bit too much hassle from a cleaning point of view which is why i'm thinking of getting one with the bags as an alternative for 2 night trips.
If you go chemical, make sure it's got a good size holding tank (which most do) and you get some of the biodegradable chemical (which says you can empty into the bush once broken down)... otherwise no other suggestions from my point... i've had it for about 5 years now but they don't seem to have changed much.
Oh and some have little legs on the bottom... that is one problem i have experienced... mines too low to the ground to just put it down... and haven't had too much luck finding a stand to get it to the right height... tried a milk crate but then too high. But most of the ones on the links below seem fairly high compared to mine.
Here's a couple links i found a couple weeks back which show some options.

Porta Loo cost acout $150-$200
Well worth it for small kids and if partner likes a little comfort for camping (and if she needs to use frequently at night).
Even my mum will camp (65 yrs) with porta loo.
Forget the bags - some of the stools for these colapse under you too if no very careful!
With a porta loo (get the slightly taller one so that will sit high enough off the ground) you can camp anywhere - that menas where most other people will not camp.
Will need to bio degradable products so you can empty.
We use ours for the ladies plus emergencies - tank last longer that way.

Hey Outlaw
Went to the post site for more info on Frazer but link not showing in info. Have to agree with you on topic of coversation being s###. on trip to frazer my concerns are more about what time on Friday do we meet? and where? are we travelling in convoy from the coast? or are we just going to meet at the rangers station in Rainbow beach and if so what time? With a group booking what are the ferry fees ($90.00 return per vehicle) park access ($25.00 for 48hrs) camping fees is there any discount with 15 vehicles and unknown people. Also when camping on the beach water is a concern too as there are no taps to turn on 8O I found 20 lts is not enough for 2 people for 2 days, just a thought :!:

Yeah thats basically what this topic was for... basic price for barge is $65 per Landy and $35 per trailer... am trying to wait a bit longer to get an idea of how many are actually meeting at 10 so can organise a group discount... last time we went over with a group we got down to $50 per landy with trailer.
Also for those who don't know how to be self-sufficient to ask questions

Ok folks, here is my shopping list ( in bold) / what I have ( italics) to be self sufficient, please let me know if I have missed anything. Also with the fridge/freezers, do you normally have that in the car during the day whilst plugged in then overnight still plugged in? And if so is that likely to drain the battery. I have seen the Waeco's with a charger/battery setup- is it worthwhile getting one of those? I know Drivesafe has mentioned that with the D3 it can have a dual battery set up ( correct me if I am wrong mate) but that will be a while off yet. Thanks,

Stevo, if you have all that you will be better prepared than most I would think.
As for the fridge, you would find that say a Waeco cf50 would run your battery flat fairly quickly ( and they have the smaller bd35 motor ).
So I would think another form of power would be a good idea, one of those Waeco power packs would be great , you can run the fridge through the power pack and while you are driving it is plugged into your car.
When you turn your car off the frige then only takes power from the power pack.
Then you have the freedom of taking the fridge anyware yuo can take the power pack.

15th March 2006, 02:04 PM
Also Stevo, just a thought only 2 of the Waeco's can be fridge and freezer at the same time (cf80 & cf110) all the others can only be all fridge or all freezer
The cf80 & cf110 have 3 compartments but they are a fair bit bigger in size and have the bd55 motor with is fairly heavy on power.

A big thanks for the tips etc on what to get/ not to get, all I need now is a another car to lug all the stuff 8O > The tent weighs more than I thought and on my own could be a bastard to put up, so going to go camping in front paddock next weekend and give everything a burl and see how it all goes. Hey Stevo, glad to see you are set for Fraser. Pretty sure there is a commecially available roof rack for the D3...think I saw a trademan type one in one of the 4x4 mags. Also I would definitely recommend a decent cargo barrier for two reasons when camping, 1, you can pack up to the roof in the boot leaving the passenger space free of clutter and 2, can safe yours and your families lives if the worst happens.....there is a fair amount of heavy camping gear flying around the cabin if it is not restrained properly. Mine has a dual position so I can fold the back seats down and get more boot space.....is also very easy to take in and out if not needed.
Looking forward to seeing you put the tent up on Fraser https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I believe there a few different brands on the market but Milford seem to be the best by a long shot. One other thing I forgot as a bonus is they have been known to act as a type of roll cage in a roll over helping maintain the integrity of the cabin space.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Firstly have to say you wave at other D3 but not at fellow D2, drove past you yesterday down springbrook rd, waved and nothing back, dont expect help with tent now [/b][/quote] Mate I did wave back, white D2 front number plate missing, I was going to mention today that I got and sent a wave back. Had a feeling it may have been yourself, as I know the other members cars in that area. Its can be quite dark inside the car so sometimes people dont see the wave, hence why I sometimes wave out the sunroof. Ill see how I go for space, am going to give a trial pack next weekend, make sure it all fits otherwise will take you up on your generous offer ( especially since you know I did wave back now) https://www.aulro.com/afvb/, thanks Josh and Mick about the sand pegs :? , so glad I asked now, might have been a bit tough me and the winks crashing in the back of the D3. Also Mick I think I still have brochure at home and it had the listing of suppliers etc at the show, and Im sure it had ones that hired as Sharlea pointed it out to me. I feel like a little kid Im so excited, can anyone tell, huh.huh https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ,

Mate really good, much better setup than where they were, I got a fair bit from there yesterday ( sales are on for the week at least I believe), the tent was at a great price. I picked up 2 water jerries from Ananconda for $10 each, the army ones that come with a little tap. I didnt realise you were coming to Fraser, I thought from a previous thread that you were going up at Easter?? I could be wrong, has happened before

Can we know how many people are meeting at Coomera on Friday morning @5:00am for the convoy up to Frazer. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ At this time I know that Stevo68 and myself are meeting there. If we could know who else at least we can then whom to hang on for before setting on for Brisbane.
Happy to co-ordinate if needed from Coomera till we meet with Outlaw Brisbane side.
