There is much published on the problems these motors encounter. From what I have read it is a common problem across most makes of diesel vehicles. Is there any preventative measure that can be taken to alleviate this problem other that by not buying a diesel. Jim

Buy clean fuel and keep it clean (as Caterpillar used to say). Ensure your fuel filters are up to scratch, and have a built-in water separator. Water in even minute quantities will kill crd pumps.

As a follow-up, i always avoid (if possible) filling up at servos in gullies or beside rivers or creeks. Much greater risk of water in the in-ground tanks. Also try to fuel at high turnover servos, like truckstops. Don't leave the engine running while you fuel up, particularly if the tank is very low.

I was also told that you do not fill up if a tanker is delivering fuel as it stirs the sediment up. The Toyota D4D comes in for a bagging for this problem but suely proper maintenance and diligence in fuelling should lessen their problems

Agree on the tanker part. Going by the number of D4D problems heard of, if I ever got one (have to be really, really cheap) I'd look at uprating the filter system asap.
