View Full Version : Noise and vibration of 6x6

Hello all, After a bit of damage to my shoulders and elbows I am having difficulty getting into and out of my Oka and am starting to wonder if a Perentie 6x6 might be an alternative until things heal up a bit. But I am obsessed about HNV - harshness, noise and vibration. My 130 TD5 is okay for short trips but the cabin is so small that there is no real space for adding lots of sound shielding. I know the Perentie has a larger cab so I can probably quieten it down pretty well, but how are they for harshness and vibration? I understand that they have lower diff ratios than the 4x4 - does this translate to a lot more noise and vibration?
I have never been in a Landie with the Isuzu motor - how does the Isuzu motor compare to the TD5 or 300tdi for noise and vibration? I have heard them described as "Strong but harsh and unrefined". I guess that may not be an issue for a vehicle "Soldiers, for the use of" but how do private owners find them?
Thanks for any advice,
Cheers.

They are noisy. I don't have sound deadening.
You need to have a drive in Peter's.

You have the wrong username for both the OKA and an Isuzu Landy....
Just an observation...

Hi Mick, thanks for the reply. Yes, I guessed they would be noisy, but at least the cabin is big enough to fit sound shielding. But sound shielding won't necessarily get rid of 'harshness and vibration'. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Who is Peter? I presume he has sound shielding in his?

[smilebigeye][smilebigeye][smilebigeye] Yes, a shrewd observation Justin, my username really doesn't fit well with many Landies! That is why I sold my 101.... The D4 is good, and the Oka has such a spacious cab that I have been able to put in enough sound shielding that it is pretty near as quiet as the D4.

Peter is a 6x6 owner who has installed a sound deadening material in the cab.

The Isuzu engine has quite a bit of vibration at idle, not so bad when moving through the rev range but still unrefined by any standard these days - they are a truck engine, strong as anything but still a truck engine. Harshness may mean something different to you an me - The 6x6's drive very well, have exceptional road manners both on and off road and I wouldn't call the suspension harsh at all, but as an overall vehicle, it's certainly no D4.
You need to have a ride in one to be sure before you splash your cash. With good sound proofing, I should think they would be very good - I haven't ridden in Pete's yet - I must catch up with him on this. :)

Thanks Homestar, I can live with vibes at idle if it is smooth on the road. The good road manners sounds appealing. I do need to try one - but it is a bit difficult to find one in downtown Bemboka - at the base of the Snowy Mountains. Grays have an auction coming up, I may be able to find one to check out before then. Failing that, there are a few on ebay, Gumtree etc.
Do you know what part of the world Pete is in? I would love to see what he has done with sound-shielding.
Would you describe them as a high-maintenance vehicle? I do need to keep my eyes on the Oka, it is very tough but there is nearly always some little thing that needs dealing with. My D4 and TD5 just go and go and go......

Pete is in the Bacchus Marsh area, not sure if he gets on here much. Mick may be able to put you in touch.
If you get a well sorted vehicle I would call them very reliable, but it can be a bit of a crap shoot about what you'll get out of the auctions unless you go over it with a fine tooth comb before bidding.

Thanks gents, Bacchus Marsh is a long haul from here.....but tempted, all the same if Pete is up for visits.
In the interests of lower noise and vibration, would it be economically reasonable to put taller diffs in? I would expect the turbo'd engine would pull a higher ratio with no trouble - but then I have never driven an Isuzu powered vehicle. A four litre Turbo Perkins pulls my 5 ton Oka happily at 100 k's at about 2,400 revs. On the flat, that is........
Cheers.

More power from the Isuzu is easy and there are people out there who have installed taller diffs, yes. They will then cruise all day at 100.
They will do 100 all day as they are, but you'd need earmuffs...

G'day "Noise Is Golden",
Unfortunately Isuzu's are very noisy and have lots of vibration, which is what makes them fun to drive. Mine is a 4X4 hardtop and I haven't tried to deaden the noise as I figure it's a lost cause, I just wear earplugs whenever I'm driving alone and go sort of deaf when driving with my wife onboard ( this happens even when I'm not in my Landy however). When idling, she vibrates harshly, whereas when cruising she just ticks along comfortably, until wind noise becomes the main noise factor. She's a great engine on a bush track or in boggy conditions, loads of torque! It's quite economical also, I get about 12.5litres/100kms (factoring 7% for speedo overread). Maintenance is very low, they go forever, just lube and the usual replacing filters etc. Nulon G70 additive in the gearbox has helped to slicken it up.
If you don't like noise and vibration, then I suggest you look elsewhere.
Cheers, Deaf Ender.

G'day DeafEnder. Yeah, noise and vibration is a funny thing and quite subjective. Mostly I hate it. On my Oka the engine was very, very tired after huge kilometres, and was using quite a lot of oil. But otherwise it was perfect, fast and mechanically quiet, with a gentle vibration that was more a throb of power. I replaced it with a very low 'k engine. It was totally different - similar power, but an uncomfortable harsh sort of vibration. I binned the new engine because of the vibes.
Now I am trying 6x6 Perentie's and find that the engines certainly do vibrate and shake, but like my old Oka engine it is quite a pleasant vibe - except for the gearbox rattles at idle.
Compared to a Defender, the Perentie 6x6 has plenty of spare space in the cab to fit sound shielding. I am sure I could get it quiet if I can overcome my reluctance to modify a Mortar Carrier - only eleven were built so it is a bit hard to wield the first blow of un-originality.
Cheers,
Noise-will-be-gone.

What makes your Perentie a mortar carrier is the pod on the back. You may consider removing it and storing it somewhere. Then construct your camping pod on the back.
As to the sound deadening in the cab, do it. The 6x6 Perentie is actually a very comfortable vehicle. I have had passengers fall asleep whilst we were travelling.

Thanks Mick, I had thought of that, but my shed is too full - the pod would have to live outside, and that would be just vandalism.
Similarly, to make the cab really quiet I would be changing a lot of things that wouldn't be readily reversible. It is a pity I hadn't learned my way around the REMLR site before I bought this - I wasn't aware that it was a bit of a rarity.
I only got it home two days ago - it has been getting a good going-over by our nearest Perentie mechanic. As you say, a very comfortable drive - especially with Bose noise canceling earphones!
Cheers,
Paul
