Hi guys, I have a feeling that the battery in SWMBO's D3 is getting a little tired and it seems to be generating a swath of random unrelated faults. Just wondering what's the best standard cranking battery for it is. Don't want nothing rediculously fancy but understand you get what you pay for so am happy to spend a few extra bucks to get a decent battery.
Any thoughts. I have been told the D3 is a bit temperamental in regards the what battery you put up front. Is this accurate??
Regards

Varta get a great wrap.
I went fancy and run Odyssey - work out excellent value if your vehicle only does very short trips most of the time as it can charge much quicker..

Supercharge is a good option (I have one [bigsmile1])- about half the price of the Varta but will give as good use in normal D3 service.

Just purchased a battery for my TDV8 RRS. $299 from Autobarn. Had more warranty than others i looked at...2 or 3 years compared to one year.

Tombie,
All the battery places I talk to dont recommend AGM under the bonnet as they dont like heat. Yes I know the Yellow top with Traxide is there but I thought that was because it was the only one that fits.

And the D3 has no Battery monitoring system,so will not charge over around 14.0v.Same as D4 2.7litre.
AGM like higher charging voltages, which the D4 3.0l is designed for.
Although LR put an AGM in mine under warranty.......even though it Seems to charge at13.9v,going by my cig lighter readout device.

As I understand it (and I could be wrong) - the original spec battery for the D3 was a Calcium Battery but recently LR changed the spec to an AGM - so if you were foolish enough to buy a new battery for your D3 from a dealer using the current part number you would get an AGM.
The Supercharge I have in my RRS meets the original specs when the car was built - Calcium, the right CCA and right Ah (about 900 and 95). Just be aware that many battery places have a listing in their books for a battery that in my opinion is below specs - is about 700CCa and about 70aH. However it will still run the car OK but has less reserve capacity.

I'd go the Supercharge, all my vehicles have ended up with them, it's almost install and forget.
There are a few different levels you can buy in the Supercharge range, as Garry col said make sure it has adequate cranking power.

The D4 2.7 does charge AGM correctly - they D4 2.7 came factory with AGM battery!
In the CCF you tell the vehicle what you have in there and it adjusts to suit.. mine happily charges [emoji6]
And this may help understand it’s not just a number [emoji41]

I tried that in the CCf,and it wouldn't go to AGM,is yours definitely in AGM?
Tim,and others have told me it can't be done,with the D4 2.7.
He also recently said on here D4 2.7l has same charging system as D3.
I am 99% sure my OEM battery was not AGM,as LR said when they replaced it under warranty, the new one is now AGM,and will last longer.
Have you seen yours charge at higher than 14.0V?
The 3.0l will charge higher,14.8,etc,it has a BMS designed for AGM.

Here are the specs from the first edition workshop manuals for both D3 and D4:
(and the 2016 edition for D4 shows the same doc like the first for D3 [bigwhistle])

The highest i have ever seen mine at was 14.1V,after a long run,and weather was very cold, around 9 degrees from memory.
I will have another look at the CCF.
Maybe i missed something

I didnt contest what you said i've just copy/pasted what's in the official documents and as i said the 2016 edition for D4 is exactly like the first edition for D3...from official LR Topix site... show me a official LR document with that AGM battery, not what some sellers are recommending [bighmmm]

unfortunately i know for sure that there are too few real "main dealers".... most of them are backyard shops who have a franchise claiming main dealership and they dont give a sh*t about the vehicles, you are right , they are simply "dealers".... and i really hope you'll not deal with them on a warranty claim whatsoever [bighmmm]
