What is the kilometre range for the rear diff to fail? I'm looking at a Freelander 2 that has done 212000 km. If the diff is ok at these km is the diff normal?

I think if it's made 200+K, it'd be OK. Most failures were early on in life so it looks like yours might have had the software update done to reduce the load on it.

The rear diff holds a very small amount of oil so if there is any oil leak at the drive shaft seals it can cause a bearing failure. Always check the rear diff oil and look for any signs of leaks. The procedure for filling involves filling to the fill plug and then removing some oil. If you do not remove the correct amount it may put pressure on the driveshaft seals. It will also force oil out the breather hose that vents in the rear left of the real bumper and will cause oil to drop on the ground when you park the vehicle.
If anyone is looking for a good Haldex unit I have one for sale for a Freelander 2, 2011year

Has anyone had a diff repaired or replaced, just looking for recommendations for a supplier of an exchange unit or a recommended gearbox specialist that is not going to charge through the roof.

The rear diff in my daughter's FL was repaired last year by Langs Differentials at Hornsby. Came highly recommended from our mechanic.
From memory around $1200 parts & labour. Been fine since.[wink11]
