Thank you Sean for suggesting this.

Erik a youtuber i have been following has very very similar style to what you have. It might be worth your while giving his videos a watch. He has gone quiet over last couple of weeks though.

Also Being the new MY18 do you know or have you confirmed you will be getting the New TFT Digital Display and upgraded HUD.

Thanks Lee & Weeds,
i have been told im getting the new TFT main dashboard, I haven't ticked the HUD option, unless it now standard fixture on the HSE LUX for 2018, with all the options they have, it's very easy to make the price already more scary than it already is!

It's not in the picture I picked, but it is having the black roof, not grey as in the picture.
i was going for the Freize Red, but that colour has been dropped for 2018, so it's the black & white jobbie. The interior colour is a little different, I'm the only one that likes it in the family so far ( but we haven't seen it in real life, the salesman said it will look the bomb, here's hoping)

so so far I have only seen 1 x D5 on the road in Perth, and was lucky enough to be in the USA last week and only saw one in Seattle, so haven't really been much to compare with because they really don't photograph well, I'm sure that will change as we all get used to the new LOOK.

Pretty pleased with the new Discovery so far... Could only raise the $$ for the Td4, but still great off-road, even over rocky terrain. Benefited from fitting some good A/T tyres though: Toyo Open Country on 20" rims...

How have you found the performance of the Td4? I'm amused to read magazine reviewers trashing it without having even driven one, and on paper at least it outperforms the Prado diesel. Would be good to hear from someone who actually knows.

In that pic I have a cardboard box made into the shape of a battery (thank you tim). This is where I am planning on putting it. I am building draws very slowly. I normally would start a thread to get peoples input but i've been bitten before. So I will post after I finish them. Having lots of fails and occasionally a few wins.

I have investigated and spoken to a few people in relation to putting a battery under the bonnet. There is room however some metal pipes would need to be relocated and I didn't want to go down that path. Given the battery is in the back its very easy to place a dual battery in roughly the same area.

2018 D5 HSE LUX,
bulit Dec 2018 / Del March 2018 Perth
finally got around to taking some pictures today, only on its second tank of diesel,
havent been off road yet, and haven’t hooked up the caravan, so only a couple of runs around the the suburbs and to work so far. It’s a very very different vehicle to my 2 x previous D4’s The steering does feel very very different, the Mrs likes it more than me, I find it too light, but I’m sure I will get used to it. It’s rides nicely, the air con is a big step backwards ( I only ordered the 3 x Zone ( didn’t know about the 4 x Zone - which should be standard here ) the interior door handles are totally in the wrong place to open & close the doors, the interior plastics seem a little cheaper than the D4, but the old brown English Windsor leather is superb. My old $800-00 rear rubber mat just fits into the back ( which surprised me ) as it looks smaller than the D4, I love the tailgate, especially how I can open it from the the drivers seat. The kids like the 2nd row seats, which surprised me, as they look so low, but they have more leg room and the they recline a little. The new electronic dash is pretty flash, and the other electronic tricks are providing hours of entertainment trying to work out what it all does. The fuel economy ( according to the built in lie o meter is claiming 8.5 litres per 100km, versus 9.0 on the D4.
The engine has a nice little growl ( which wasn’t there in the D4’s ) and it has more poke than the previous D4’s.

I have the black roof, black pack, dynamic pack with black wheels, so the looks are growing on me, I think the plain white looks a little too plain, but the black bits set it off and it doesn’t look like a kitchen appliance. ( even can handle it looks from behind )

Was it worth $35K more than my last HSE, absolutely not, but I ordered with my heart and not my head, I think once I get it off road and hook the van up, I’m hoping the latest love affair strengthens and becomes like my D4’s, which have been my favorite vehicles I have ever owned.

Jack, thanks for your post. As WhiteD3, the past owner of a white D3 and a D4 (now driving a silver SDV6 which looks crap) I appreciate the white but the back of the D5 still reminds me of my mother-in-laws backside.......and not in a nice way!

Me.....and others.....are trying to talk me into a D5 (sorry....the "new Discovery") but I think the darker colours do better at hiding that rump. Your thoughts?

PS....when the "new Discovery's" come on the used market in 2 years what will they be called? What will the "MY19 new Discovery" update be called?

Forgive me..I'm ranting...............

IndusD4

If you don't the look of the D5 then why get one?

As for the back, if it is the offset plate that bothers you then Startech have an insert to center it. But in my view the smaller AU plates look better than the euro sized ones, on a black background in the insert as with Jack's car that bit visually disappears.

Hi WhiteD3,

for me, the white is practical, is easier to look after, even more so if you go 4WD and pin stripe a little, the colours are a $2000.00 to a $4000.00 option, yes some colours do make it look a very different vehicle, but i must say the dynamic pack along with the black roof and black pack do seem to lesson the back end look dramatically ( in my opinon anyway ) - i really do try to not bring my mother in laws back end into the converstaion, it just all wrong on some many levels........ ha ha

I hate standard size number plates on all cars, i do like our WA slim line ones, i think they look smart on most vehicles.

i think Land Rover are trying to be cute - some marketing peanut is being paid a small fortune to come up with the New Discovery monkier, what with Discovery Sport - which to the average punter is a Disco as well, what were they thinking, hopefully someone will stand up at LR and say, why dont we call it a D5 !!! - put Land Rover back on the hood again and leave the Discovery on the hood to just the Discovery Sport maybe, they all look the same which is not good for the brand.

maybe you should wait for the "New Discovery SVR" Supercharged V8 Petrol, maybe you could put your mother in law on e-bay to get the deposit for it ?

Working in getting the vehicle ready for the big trip. With the 5 sitter there is plenty of room for a good size battery, Given the aluminium floor the decision was lithium to keep the weight down. 200watt solar on roof should keep the fridge going indefinitely. Included is redarc 40amp battery management unit and electric trailer brakes.https://www.dropbox.com/s/td0tsy2tudj12g0/Battery.JPG'dl=0https://www.dropbox.com/s/oyendudbwo22a4n/Roof.JPG'dl=0

Hi all,

Mike here visiting from the US. I'm stuck in a land where these things are just used as family cars, hardly ever off roaded. So Im here to hang with the people who really use them.

Just starting my build. Waiting for proper 18" wheels so I can put better tires on. Lights coming for the rook rack. Winch will be added when a hidden winch mount is available in the US soon.

I did do one cosmetic change. How do you like my D5 "Autobiography?"

We started the black vinyl under the mirror along the top of the door sill and continued back until it met the rear window. A clear vinyl was overlaid to make it shine like the factory black trip and roof. A matte stripe seals the vinyl and mirrors the rubber seals around the windows. I'll be sure to post more as this truck develops. Hoping to hold out for 18" wheels, but if someone wants to trade 20s for the 22s that came on it, I'll jump at the chance.

The Tyres are BF Goodrich KO2's. 275/55 R20.

Really happy with the tyres have only been 4x4 once and they performed well. They are as quiet as you can get on the open road too. Yes a bit of a whirr but not enough to be irritable.

Hey Mark,

The SD4 was great. Not once was I left wanting for more power and super efficient on fuel.

Tyres are the 255/55/R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 A/Ts that came with it when it was delivered. Would NOT recommend, 1 tyre completely fell to bits and a 2nd had a slow leak. Will be looking for replacements before the next big trip.

Fitted them Sunday morning and immediately got it muddy. [thumbsupbig]

After 6 wonderful years our Discovery 3 has been replaced by a Discovery 5

Our new HSE V6 is in Aintree Green and is otherwise a pretty standard HSE.

What a wonderful time we had with our D3. Travelling all over Australia's east coast sometimes towing one of our classic cars. Apart from normal maintenance the only problem we encountered in 190,000km was a faulty fuel pump which turned out to be nothing more than a dirty electrical connector.

The Disco 5 has big shoes to fill but first impressions are good!

Ol mate probably requested it, and sketched it up with svo and they said ok

I reckon the JLR marketing dept would have jumped at that opportunity.

Same as giving Les Hiddins a D2 to do adds. Just a different market target group.

They certainly did! and despite it being totally naff, they went with it anyway! Must have paid Jamie a motza.

Les would have been a better choice. Even city slickers like to imagine themselves as bush tucker men rather than dorky hub cap cooks.

Apart from the butter making hubcaps......SVO are showing they can pretty produce anything you want if you have the dollars.

Maybe they should release and expedition D5....

I love the new disco. My only issue is I want smaller wheels as the 22’s look great and are wonderful on road but I need more rubber to go off-road.

I saw that too. I feel like the winch and electric tow controller would scare people off, figuring it’s been used off road

i have a winch on mine, not sure if I should remove it before sale. It’s never been used but might give the wrong impresion

A winch wouldn’t put me off. I’d feel more reassured towing the tvan on the beach if I had a winch to drag it through a difficult patch.

Any chance you could put up the link to that post about the winch.

Hi All
Ordered our new 2021 Discovery 5 but doesn’t arrive until May.
Looking forward to the new hybrid motor and our first automatic in approximately 28 years!! Just a bit anxious about getting AT tyres for the 21inch rims?
This what it will look like, all black, black leather interior, black rims, privacy glass and dual opening sun roofs.
Can’t wait for it.

Hi graeme,

Apologies for late reply. The Current Tyres i have are on 22" Rims. I will have to get exact size tomorrow as I have lent my car out to a work colleague as her car got heavily scratched and I'm helping her out.

Hi Lee,

Just saw your post re the 22" rims. I also have these on mine and a few local tyre shops say they can't fit AT's to a 22" rim, so I've been looking at changing out as a result. Mind letting me know what AT's you where able to find to fit 22" rims?

Cheers,

chuck

I think you could get a Nitto Terra Grappler 285 45 22 on the 22" rims same diameter as my 275 55 20 but 10mm wider.

After almost 15 years my D4 has gone to a new owner, the mechanic who over the years has done most of the work on the vehicle would you believe. He (Ravindra) is pictured in his employers workshop. I have now gotten myself into a D5 which whilst still a Land Rover is very different to what I have been used to so I am still finding my way around it and its systems.
