View Full Version : British Crime shows have a problem

The past few nights I have been watching some British Crime shows on Fox

These are quite entertaining, Vera, Lewis & some old Frost.
But unfortunately 1 thing keeps happening in these crime shows that makes them far less believable.

What is the problem? You may well ask!

When the police all turn up Mob Handed with lights & sirens blaring it just doesn't ring true

Because there is always a Police Defender in the lead??

Now, really. Is it likely that the Defender is going to be the quickest? Is it likely that the poor victim has to rely on the outstanding performance of a Defender to rescue them from the Criminal?

My only explanation for this is that the Defender accidently started out from the Police Station at the front & then held all the other Police Cars up

More truth in crime drama please

To make it worse, they refer to Land Rovers as "jeeps" (note the lower case J).

English cops, they only use Landrovers in the country just in case a Wallaby jumps out in front of them(or is that a roo)....

What amazes me is how many people get murdered over there, a bit like that place near Sydney, where people die daily, Summer Bay...

I am so glad I live in a murder free zone...

They leave the Yankee crime shows for dead.
At least they don't blow the Defenders up. ;)
Years ago my father in law fell asleep watching tele and when he woke up there were skyscrapers burning and thought it was more Yankee BS,
then he realised it was a dinkum news report.

Cheers, Mick.

That's detectiving, a long, slow process of elimination.

Thats because in the UK all 4WD's are called "jeeps". Just like we used to all vacuums "Hoovers"

I was over there and a bit stunned to here one of my cousins referring to her sons Discovery as a jeep.

And of course Inspector Crabbe drives a Saab but then he's just another exception that proves the rule or something like that. :coplight:

DCI Barnaby drives a modern Volvo, but:

Bergerac drove a 1949 Triumph

Campion drove a Lagonda (appropriate for era)

Fearless
Vera drives a Def 90

Morse drove a Mk2 Jag

Inspector Lynley drove a 1969 Bristol 410

Inspector George Gently drove a Rover P5 - but that's appropriate for the era in which the series is set.

Gerry Standing (an ex-cop in New Tricks) drove a 1977 Triumph Stag

Gently's DS (Bacchus), drove a Corsair, contemporary but flash for the day. Why did the coppers drive their own cars? Was it because the Pommie force was running short of 30" push bikes?

Back in the day Cops here Victoria used to get paid to use their own car in some country locations.
A friends father was a country cop down in south east Victoria and he recalls his father being paid to use the family car for police duties, and apparently it was rather common.

It might happen again now that Commodores and Falcons are history. ;)

But it is there a total?

OneOff

MIDSOMER MURDERS

"IS THE BODY COUNT ALWAYS THIS HIGH"?
"Is the body count always this high in Midsomer" - Sgt. Scott
"It has been remarked on" - Barnaby

Lines from the end of 'The Fisher King'

So how many murders have occurred in Midsomer? The exact figure is a little confused as Barnaby's investigations frequently uncover 'historical' murders that occurred many years previously, which act as a catalyst to the current crime.
There are also a goodly number of suicides and just occassionally deaths by accidents or natural causes where murder is suspected.
The most popular murder weapon is still the old fashioned knife or sharp bladed instrument, although shotguns have been widely used. Some of the more original methods have included electrocution, bows and arrows, falling furniture and even someone drowned in a cauldron of soup!

Follow the link below to see a list of all the murders for the episodes screened in the U.K so far. With further new episodes to be shown shortly and another series currently being filmed, the death rate looks set to increase still further. Watch here for updates!

THE BODY COUNT SO FAR
265 Murders
16 historical inc. 1 possible
11 suicides inc. 3 historical
15 accidental deaths inc. 2 historical
9 natural causes where murder is suspected or relevant to the plot,
1 of which may have been a murder
1 unexplained death (Talking to the Dead)
Historical death by firing squad (Shot at Dawn)
1 historical massacre (unspecified nos)
