Just exploring the 1980 2door that has re-entered the family and noticed a tube running from the filler plug on the gearbox to the filler on the transfer case. I assume it’s something to do with equalising pressure, but as they are at different levels wouldn’t oil transfer from one to the other? Any explanations or information would be welcome.
thanks
Woolly.

That's the Dodgy Brothers way of dealing with a failed seal between the main gearbox and the transfer case. I think someone on here said it worked, but that's only my dim memory and not guaranteed to be true. Also, there's a spacer on the mainshaft, on the end inside the transfer, which can apparently spin on the shaft and let oil through. If you need more information, it would probably be better to post something on Technical Chatter where more members would see it.

Thanks for the advice, Davo. There are enough other things that need fixing on it to keep me occupied for a while, so I will put it on the “ to do in the future” list.

Yes it is a dodgy fix and yes they can run happily for a long time like that[wink11]

Common on a lot of other makers of 4wd as well as a fix for a hard or perished seal.
Fix the issue and it should be right for another 20 plus years.

Cheers, Mick.

Had one on my Stage 1 for years. It's a temp fix for an oil migration issue. Works just fine.

If you're anything like the rest of us, you'll pencil it in for 2025 . . . and still not get around to it! [biggrin]

Nice to know at last that I'm 'normal'![bigwhistle]
