Dropped past QLD Camper trailers yesterday on my way back from a meeting and had another look around the showroom and had a good chat with one of the guys there.
Hey recommended a hardfloor unit for my intended use and showed me around the range KK units on display.
They certainly are brilliant looking and finished units with more features than you would probably need and quality plus in fittings and finish but when the cheapest unit ($24900.00) was dearer than the disco ($19K) I started to loose intrest, the top of the line one with all the bells and whistles topped the $42,000.00 mark 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
Now I know the resale on them is fantastic but wow that is a lot of loot to take out in the bush.
Looks like I will be concentrating my search to the soft floor box trailer style.

It's all a matter of taste and budget really. When you have a look around include the Cavalier Camper in your inspection list, I have been very happy with mine. It is not easy to unfold on your own until someone tells you to clip a couple of cheap dog's leads on the tabs near the first bracket you pull over, once you do that it is easy. Mine has been to Mitchell Falls and over East and the only damage has been a couple of tired bolts which hold the drop down legs for the kitchen. Repalcement cost around $2.30.
We have the 9ft extra heavy duty with the awning and it cost around $7500 about 4 years ago.
I am sure that there are lots of other cheapies you will like - I reckon these gin palaces are over the top, especially the high rise job elsewhere in this forum at around $48000.

I've just been through the looking for a camper trailer exercise. I agree with you the KK is a great piece of kit but was way out of my price range. In the end I liked both the Camper factory offering from Capalaba and one from Trackabout Campers in Moss Street. I ended up going for the Trackabout as it seemed pretty good value for money at about 11k all up. A workmate of the wifes has one and has not long completed a 3 month trip through the gulf and central Australia and was very happy with it so that finally sold me. I hope to pick it up this weekend or early next week so I can't say anything about it from personal experience yet.

Hi Fossil,
I have to agree with your choice of the Trackabout units, I had a 2 hr tour of the factory before Xmas and was pretty sold on them back then, but thought I would look at the hard floors models that seem to be so popular in the mags etc, I think it may be from their marketing budgets due to the prices they charge that makes them seem so popular. 8O
I think for the money the Trackabout is probably 50% better than its nearest competitor, to find a similar setup, features and quality I have seen others for $15K to $20K https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Plus I reckon that they are some of the most honest easy to deal with people in the industry.
BTW, are you getting them to match the wheels to your disco :?:
Would be keen to hear your thoughts once you have dragged it around a bit.

Have to agree with the Trackabout crew being easy to deal with. They were only too happy to help me with what were probably pretty silly questions. I didn't actually deal with the boss, John but I have heard he is great to deal with. I was speaking to a young guy Bret and he was very helpful. I suppose I shouldn't give too much of a wrap till I get the trailer which now looks like being early next week but so far so good. Getting them to fit hubs to match the Disco was no problem. It would have cost more to get suitable rims but I had a spare set of Disco steel rims with suitable tyres and they used them. Ended up saving me money.
I'll do a bit of a post on it when I get it and have given it a bit of a work out. I'm sure there will be a few negatives that you never seem to think of till you've lived with something for a while.

We paid $16k for an Aussieswag hardtop four years ago and have been very happy with it. The new ones are a bit dearer I think but you have to take charge of the process. The manufacturers load them up with all sorts of luxury options to boost their profits, so you have to go in knowing specifically what features you want and order it to suit your needs and budget.

Hey ZOOK,
Didn't know that they were still going, I remember seeing one at a Syd LROC meeting and Neil Flower doing a product test on it back in the nineties.
Bit tall for my liking, I'm pretty sold on the Trackabouts ATM.

I have a Jayco Hawk off road camper which I am happy with. A few negatives I have are:
1) Bought it before the tow vehicle hence rim size and bolt pattern different to tow vehicle (too lazy and cheap to change)
2) dust seal is next to nothing due to vents for door and fringe.( door vent fixed by duct tape plastic sheet)
3)have to open up to get to kitchen, but usually do not stop on side of road to boil kettle, that is what the thermos is for.
What I like is:
1) did not have purchase a fridge, one is built in
2) hard top over head when raining, always under shelter for cooking
3) easy to tow
4) easy to set up

I have a Cavalier Deluxe Offroad and for the price are great. I have the 18ft version, which gives 18ft of floor space and a queen size bed on top of the trailer.

We have a top made by Customline Camper Trailers at Beenleigh, fitted to an ex army trailer with aluminium tub custom made for me. Total cost around
$5500 by the time I'd built the kitchen and fitted the water tank. It's a 9 foot model which has heaps of room, as we only use the thing to sleep in. Agree, most of the Taj Mahals out there are so over the top, you'd be better off with a caravan.

I just can't believe that only 10 years ago (1996) we bought a brand new KK with then lot for just over $14K. I sure wish I had kept it now.

Hi all i purchased a new kimberly karavan last year..We left melbourne, and headed for our trip. All through Kakadu the kimberlys, the gibb river road, all that area and then back down the Tamani, and not even a flat tyre..We have done many trips.the first camper was a dingo,ok if you like sleeping on a bed of dust,we have also had three K.K campers, not a problem with any of them,The only thing is i can say is thay are a little overpriced, but then you dont have to buy them do you.The karavan is bullet proof ond dust proof if you change/clean out the filter..cheers,Hendo2

its approx 17ft X 13ft with the annex up which can be enclosed with a floor. large tool box on the extended draw bar, kitchen on the tailgate with water tank under.
all up with 90% of the acc available it came in under $9k on-road.
i saw it at the off-road show at Cleveland showground early 2010, another outfit had something similar and wanted $26k :o:o

We purchased ours from Castle Campers as well. Cost was just over $9000 on the road. But, we did have a lot of extras. Ours is the heavy duty offroad version with the luxury kitchen etc. The thing I like is the 5 year warranty on the trailer.

My father bought a new camper trailer last year. Cannot remember the brand however was in Brisbane.
There were a lot of options which added to the price needed to know what you wanted or needed (different answers to those two).
Point here is that he looked on eBay and saw they were selling them considerably cheaper than buying in the show room.
Watched for a while and grabbed one of spec he wanted that not too many were bidding on. Of course you had to have patience as some were popular and had plenty of bids.
