300tdi water pump squeaky

Water pump has no play in the shaft/pulley, no leaks, car runs cool.

BUT with the belt off turning by hand it makes a rubbery squeaky sound and has some resistance. The pulley is clear of hoses....

My experience of worn water pumps has been bearing rumble, shaft play and leaks... not squeaks.

Any one had this before?

Could be the seal starting to go.

Water pump seals are a spring loaded carbon ring against a steel or ceramic rotating ring, a bit of a squeak at hand speed isn't going to do anything.
