Gday all,

Was under the D3 late today and noticed a line of what looks like in a perfect line across the trans tunnel directly above the rear tail shaft where it comes off the back of the transfer case. Not sure how long its been there , and it don't seem like oil , it looks green and am sure its grease, so with no oil on the back of the transfer case and all else clean underneath I don't think its a rear seal but stranger things have happened.

Gave it a good degrease and will see how long it takes to come back. Has anyone had this happen to them ?? Also has anyone had to change the bearings on the tailshaft at all , and is it a major job ?

Thanks and Cheers Ean

Sounds like it may be UJ/CV grease

Gday Tombie ,

I have seen many pumps that have had to much grease pumped into the bearings and they throw out a similar looking line..

They are a sealed unit from what I can see , so maybe its starting to fail. There doesn't seem to be any vibration so will see what happens now that's its been cleaned.

Cheers Ean

Gday All,

Done some googling today and seems as tho L/R consider the front and rear shafts as throw away items. All the info I could find was to get a replacement shaft. It seems the common failing is the centre support bearing , and some have had a bit of success replacing just this , but I cant find any info on either the CV joint that is at the front where it bolts onto the transfer case , and the UJ at the diff end.

Cant see any traces under the car today , but its prolly only travelled 10ks so don't expect much to show until its done a few more than that. There is no play at all in the CV or the UJ so not sure what it all means.
