So as many of you probably know the TDCi decided to spit a clutch spring,so I spent the time to remove the Gearbox and order all the bits.Anyway, the job took a back seat to end of semester final exams,my clinical skills competencies and preparing for a month working at Laverton Hospital,I have the Tdi and Tracey's being driving my son Declan's Golf so I didn't rush to complete the job, which brings us to today. So today I got stuck in,took the Transfer off,new output seal from State wide Bearings,$4.30,Loctite sealant,Penrite 75/85 synthetic oil and I thought I'd remove the adapter shaft and re-grease it and wouldn't you know it's bone dry.I had it replaced under warranty and the stupid incompetent dickheads removed the old dry rooted one and replaced it with a brand new DRY one,I could not believe it.When it was replaced they even told me LR had changed the fitment of them requiring them to be greased, but mine wasn't. Anyway, lucky I have a week free, new adapter, new HD clutch, seals, oil, slave cylinder and she will be good to go,we are selling it next year to buy a Disco Sport, who ever buys it will have a good Defender, now I've fixed all the dodgy bits. That’s it,do the job yourself or it never ever gets done ****ing properly.
But if it’s warranty, then you are not allowed to do it yourself,so then you trust someone to do it and they stuff it up.☹️
See this all the time😩😩

Scania ( won't say which one, but local to me ) replaced the compressor in my V8. Driving to Brisvegas I lost all air coming down Cunningham's Gap. Turns out, they don't use splines or keyways or gears to drive them, they use a special bonding substance. Seems the "technician" overlooked this minor step. 24 hours later.....

You've nailed it Pat. I found myself in a similar position but from the outside looking in when we sold our 10 yo bought new D2a TD5 to our son. We used it for touring and it was ALWAYS serviced and had ALL work done from new at the local dealership from which we brought it. This was SWMBO's (nurse/midwife shift worker) daily commute and my reasoning was 'don't mess with it', leave it to the professionals (at vast stealership expense). It's OK for me to work on the non vital transport but leave the seriously important vehicle to the professionals. In hindsight this turned out to be a major mistake. Ultimately, after two episodes of having to explain to the dealership 'service consultant' that there was more to a service than an oil change (I kid you not) and not one but two episodes where the oil filter had become 'unscrewed' I gave them the flick, unfortunately 10 years too late.
Where we had used the vehicle for touring and SWMBO's daily commute no.1 son is more into serious off road and push it to the edge 4WD'ing. The D2a properly configured is perfect for this but for a 10 yo 250k Km vehicle in factory std. condition as rebuilds of various components became necessary the totally incompetent dealership workmanship became obvious. Whether it was stripped threads poorly helicoiled in the oil filter assembly or incorrectly fitted bolts in the gearbox/TC fouling the gears or stripped and broken bolts in the rear diff housing to highlight a few examples of the 'quality' of dealership servicing the end result was a lot of unnecessary damage to the vehicle. Fortunately no.1 son is mechanically competent and does his own work including engine/gearbox etc rebuilds (I told you he works it hard) so expense was minimised. Not all are this fortunate.
'Once upon a time' dealership maintenance was a 'plus' when selling a vehicle but from this and other experiences I would now call it the 'kiss of death' and wouldn't touch a dealer maintained vehicle with a forty foot pole.

I got heaps of stories like this, extremely annoying.
Unfortunately Pat's story is similar to what i have had happen at the LR stealers around here, hence i never use them.
Yet the Jap dealers where our work vans go,no issues.
Very frustrating, and this sort of thing happens all day,in all trades[bigsad]

I had a new transfer box fitted under warranty to the 110 Puma and asked the service foreman at the stealers to ensure the output shaft got greased..... "dis is not a service item" he advised me in a curry take-away accent.
I've since had that shaft replaced by and independent and it was thick with red rust.
I'm trying to sell it now and have been for a while, it's been over serviced with all things like this shaft and axles replaced etc., but I think buyers are going for the "dealer serviced" vehicle rather than one that's been properly looked after.
Good luck to them.

Ha, Gets your attention doesn’t it.
I did a Beta descent into a tight little valley in PNG in a Twotter to find that the power for Window heat had been removed.
Nothing like trying to line up with the runway on short final with the window fogged up(head out the window,****ing rain,.......glory days indeed!).
Ginger beers forgot to enter into maintenance log that they’d removed power lead(hadn’t collared C/B so everyone was unaware).

There are lots of horror stories about Shonky or Inept dealerships and independent workshops So it is important to find a workshop/dealership that does do quality work and that they also they guarantee the work that they do and that they back up that guarantee with action not BS.
I am So glad that I live in Geraldton and not in the other areas/States that have these Inept/Shonky workshops in them[thumbsupbig]

Hi Alan,
I think I know this dealer. I had my 2015 Puma (Jack) in for a service a couple of years ago and it came back scratched to bu**ery with little sworls in the duco. The car went in quite dirty (a lesson there) and they washed it as 'part of the service'. What they didn't do was try to get the surface grit off so just rubbed the grit into the paint. They also scratched the bullbar where they had sat and hung tools on the top tubing. Annoying thing is the scratches on the bar slap me in the face when I drive reminding me of the sh*t service the dealer gave. When I called the dealer to complain they reminded me the car has scratches down the side (bush pinstriping) but said to bring the car in and they would have a look. In the end I didn't have time, couldn't be bothered arguing with the guy and just put it down to experience.
Couldn't wait for the warranty to run out. I live in Sydney now (Inner West) and am keen to find a good mechanic to service Jack.

Interesting that when I worked as a race car tech/engineer that the best mechs weren't ex-road car mechanic's but from other trades/professions...

I had the oil pick up recall done by the local stealership, got it back, didn't think much about it, got it up on a hoist one day to look at cutting out the centre muffler. The bolt closet to the engine block on the sump was stripped and was black siliconed on to stop it from coming loose. A few pictures and a terse email to the "Service Consultant" later they didn't hesitate to fix it. The idiots also replaced the gearbox after they did the output shaft, all because there was a noise in it that ended up being a rattling clutch plate spring. The clutch is much nicer now. Also replaced (under warranty) the turbo hoses, MAF sensor, ECM, all because the intercooler had a hole in it and they couldn't pick it. Took them 2 weeks with a loan car to sort that one. Luckily for me, One of their ex employee's got the ****s with them, left and started his own independent LR workshop and now is doing a roaring trade due to LR's incompetence. His attention to detail is fantastic, even little things like setting up the screen washers to hit the screen at the same spot during a service.

depends how mechanically minded you are.
im a mechanic maybe 1hour a week
compare that to the guy who works as a mechanic 36 hours a week...

110% agree.
i wouldnt continue to own a LR if it wasnt for my mechanic.

This is the reason my BIL sold his shiny new Triton and bought an old 80 series. The dealer kept messing up the services. One time the sump plug was left loose and dumped his oil on the road while driving!
The BIL is a mechanic and is much happier doing it all himself.

If the mechanics that do it 36 hours a week are as bad as most of them prove I am not sure about that
I recently had a clutch job done the first thing I find when I get home is all the clips for the bonnet stays are broken off (Ok I forgive that as they are only plastic)
A month later I cant get the car out of diff lock after pulling it all apart I find that they haven't bothered doing up the bolt on the diff lock linkage.
I dont see how people drive Land Rovers without being mechanics certainly in remote areas

Hahahahaha "Twotter". Was evacuated from Casey base (Antarctic) some years ago in a Twin Otter which we all referenced by the homonym "Twatter".

I had this with my previous 2014 Defender 90 a couple of years ago and I took it to MLR who sorted it nicely. But I have since traded it for a 2016 110 and touch wood it has been great so far![smilebigeye]

Had a suspension compressor fail. Dealer fitted a new one and away we go. Well for a while anyway. Then another compressor failure. Back to garage as part still under warranty.
Much grumbles from owner as the tech had used computer to determine failure and cleared code as should have done. His issue was that this had shown symptom not real problem which was that the relay that controlled the compressor was not working resulting in the compressor over running. Relay is worth less than a pound retail. Put in new compressor and relay at their cost.
Made an expensive lesson for the tech as they could not return the compressor as a warranty issue. The supplier checked all returns as part of their product development program.
