This was seen at the ARB stand at the Wandin 4WD shown in Melbourne. It is still not on the market yet but is not far away now for the poeple who want a Safari snorkel over the LR one. Not that you can get either here yet.

The snorkel is mounted using a bracket fixed to the 'A' pillar (see pic below). The plastic cover on the 'A' Pillar has been slotted for the bracket. I cannot see how the snorkel is fixed to the guard but I suspect it is bolted to it like the LR version.

The snorkel is one piece except for the air intake which is fixed by a clamp. It is not as integrated as the LR one near the air intake.

Pricing was only estimated to be between $400-$600. I bet the LR one will be double that for sure.

What do you think?

Hi Chris,
The Safari was actually identical to the LR (I think Safari actually made them) for the series 2 disco. All except for the name landrover replacing safari. Believe it or not, the LR was cheaper!!!!

Ask Safari 4x4.

http://www.safari4x4.com.au/

I've asked 6 times already and I think James is sick of me asking and sent me a reply which put it out for 2 more months hoping not to hear from me again.

How about someone else give him a tingle and see what he says.

yeah baby, thats how I want my D3 to look, the bar and winch setup looks great. How important is a snorkel?? Ive read different thoughts etc, why would you get one? Im assuming if you did a fair bit of water crossings/ deep crossings?

How important is your engine to you???

It only takes one minor mistake - and next thing it's costing you 6k plus!

Reasons for snorkel also include dust ingress (helps get clearer air) as well as keeping water out of your diesels!

Thank for the feedback but doesnt really answer the question as to why ones needs a snorkel under what circumstances. ie at this stage I do 90% onroad / 10% offroad. In time that will change as i set up the vehicle, so if a snorkle was on the list, what would be the determinants and adv/disadv over the option that goes over the bonnet ( cant remember what it is called). Thanks experts https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ,

G'day stevo68,

A friend of mine had ones of them toy vehicles, but still a good 4x4. He didn't learn about snorkels until it was too late.

He was out with a group of people from his 4wd club when they went through a water crossing. His was the only vehicle without a snorkel, and eventhough he made it across the engine wasn't sounding very healthy.

Basically some water had got swallowed by the engine by the air-intake. End cost? He replaced the engine and sold his 4wd. Not interested anymore.

We don't want to see that happen to you mate. Trust us, get a snorkel. If *any* water manages to sneak it's way down your air intake when the engine is running, then you are 95% likely to be in $$$ pain....

Southern LR in Perth told me that LR have a policy of locally sourcing add-ons. He said that it is likely that the Mantec snorkel won't come out here, but that the Safari one will be allocated an LR part number and become available through dealers as well as usual Safari outlets. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Thanks Grizzly for the info, so essentially it is a case of prevention is better than the cure https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Well just one more thing for me to convince the little lady that I need 8O ,

Jamo,

If this is the case then LRA better get this accessory off their Website shouldn't they :x

My dealer was still waiting for LRA to assign a part number so your probably right.

There is also the advantage of less dust and when your following someone down a nice dry dirt road that will make a huge difference at the end of the day.

Re dust, I'm not convinced.

Dust billows up and outward right into the path taken by the snorkel.

I really wonder if anyone has done any definitive tests or is it all assumption?

I was on one trip with a bloke who had a snorkel on his Disco - I had none (at the time) on my '87 RR. His aircleaner clogged much more than mine.

Disregard the hyperbole written by 4WD mag correspondents with their "...snorkel to breathe cool, clean air...." commentary - they are writing for the throng.

Dunno Ron,,,
at some stage dust settles,, usually downwards,, so the snorkle must find cleaner air sooner.
I agree that following another vehicle, all bets are off, and a precleaner is a option, but travelling alone, mine runs dust free.
the inside of an engine bay will be hotter than outside. hot air is not damaging to motors, just knocks performance around.

If you are buying accessories from the dealer don't accept their prices at face value. When I queried the price of a snorkel, which was about twice the price of one from ARB, and was exactly the same (re-badged Safari), they just said yeah we can match that price.

I guess a lot of people just pay up and they make a huge profit.

I'm confused I thought it said - above- that they didnt know when the snorkle would be available for the D3? Is there one out now or was Frenchie referring to a earlier Disco?

And what's a Donaldson pre-cleaner?

A Donaldson precleaner is an attachment fitted to the top of a snorkel and does a primary filter before the air reaches the main air filter.
Have a look at this link.
