I've got an old trailer made from the back half of a LR series ute, including the axle housing & brake drums(not connected), etc. At the moment it has a standard ball hitch which I'm about to replace with something.
The trailer weighs about 420kgs empty. I can get it registered in WA for a max. accumulated mass of 999kgs without brakes, or aparently up to about 1900kgs if it's braked.
I want to use it as a basic off-road trailer (hopefully to go most places I take the rangie, as clearance & ramp-over allows) and probably wont load it more than 500-600kgs (plus 420kg tare weight), but of course my rangie is only supposed to tow 750kgs unbraked.
My questions:
- Can I use the standard drum brakes of the LR series axle to attach to a braked coupling and will they be effective enough to pass motor reg. inspection?
- What sort of coupling would be best? - I like the look of the ORACs, or AT35 but haven't seen pics of them with braking cylinders. The whole trailer hasn;t cost me too much so far, so I don;t want to over do it with the coupling costs :-)
- Where do I get the above couplings - I know a supplier of Trigg/Treggs, etc, here in WA, but not ORACs or AT35.
