G'day, my 2001 defender is getting spot corrosion on the panels (oustide). Its only in a few places and only and 3-5mm in size. Seems to be close to seams or rivets, but in one case in the middle of the rear door. The rig hasnt seen a great deal of beach actions, so wondering if thats normal??
Does anyone knwo if you can claim under a Landrover warranty? or whether is terminal? can be fixed???
Cheers

Jimmy, i just finished rustproofing my '99 'fender as well. Was surprised at the amount of rust inside the door frames, but all is well again. Make sure the drainage holes are open and keep an eye on it. Also never been near salt water, but live at the coast... Good luck and look after your steed!

I was looking at a 2nd hand 110 defender (2002 model) about a month ago, from the Adelaide dealer.
I mentioned the rust marks visible on the "topping" (not sure what the tech term is) inserts between the "tub" part and the glass at the rear, and they said it would be fixed for free under Land Rover's body warranty.
Not sure how long the body warranty goes for (obviously a 2002 is still covered - so maybe it is 5 or 6 years), but definitely worth a question to your local dealer.

It's 6 years. Only catch is you have to have a yearly corrosion inspection which costs about $75. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ I'm not sure what would happen if you couldn't prove those inspections had been done. 8O

so would the corrosion inspections be done whilst your getting your servicing under warranty?Or are you supposed to pay the extra from new?

I've not heard of customers being charged for them while a service was carried out (I wouldn't expect them to be). Part of the service schedule (on some models) is that the inspection is done.
If the services don't fall at the yearly intervals, then it would be up to the owner to ensure that the inspections are done. If it was done by the selling/servicing dealer, I still wouldn't expect the corrosion inspection to be charged (but some dealers might).

thanks guys,
so, in the event that the corossion got more 'active' (at present its just small dots), has anyone tried fixing it? or got someone else to do so? cost?
Also, with stone chips, has anyone got any recommendations for fixing?? damn gunbarrell gave the rig a good tickle.
cheers

I bought the truck in Melbourne when i lived there (Mornington - plenty salt air and spray), and upon arrival in Queensland, Rick's fitted one of those electronic jobbies. That was aprox 3 years ago. What made me check my car was when i closed the door one day i noticed rust particles falling off, enough reason for any person to get seriously upset.... I pulled all the covers off the doors and the doorframes had more rust than i was happy with. The factory sealant on the underbody and chassis was also gone after many gravel roads so i decided to have it professionally done. Unfortunately i don't have the time to do it myself, but such is life.
So i cut out the rust and neutralised everything that was left, then took it to a rustproofing dude here on the coast. They rechecked all the visible rust, neutralised it and obviously cleaned the whole underside quite vigorously. Apparently the chassis is in good nick. The whole underbody was resprayed in a bitumen-based product (2 layers) and the insides of the doors also done. They go down all the channels and tubes etc, and it was less than $500. A lot of $$$ but i don't have the time to do it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ . They now look after it for the next couple of years and touch-up jobs are done regularly. I'm still in the process of fitting all the panels back :?
Once it is sorted it should last a few years again

sounds like salt will just bounce of your truck now. Do you have the name of the rust proofing guys? I might go have a chat.
Cheers
