I believe they are one of the best touring tyres available for mixed tarmac and sand work. Numerous mentions of how good the XZYs are, are made by people travelling long distance treks across Africa. Some people have gone all the way from London to Capetown without a puncture, and enough tread at the end of the trip to turn around and do it again.
Because they are more like a light truck tyre than anything else, they are not so good in mud, but they have a high sidewall rating and resist punctures extremely well.
I bought XZLs because they are a bit more agressive and better for mud on the farm, but they still get very high milages out of them, but I seriously considered the XZYs.
Here is a sample page I found using Google:

There are lots of similar reports.

Jasper - at what price are you able to get the XZY's? I'm looking at a set of XPC's (235/85-16) at the moment for $269 each and I'd like to know if the prices are comparable.
Cheers

I would be interested in what people are paying. I will need new tyres soon and need to get good milage out of them.

On the SIII I run 7.50x16 Truck Steer tyres (cross plys) on the road. They're quiet and good on sand. For all other offroading I run a set of Custom Extra Grips. I keep the tyres at 50psi and they last me 7 years - over 100,000km.
On the Range Rover I run 215 85R16 Radials at the same pressure. My last set (Kumhos) lasted about 120,000km.
I don't rotate the tyres, except when I take them off to swap treads on the SIII. My spare (on the SIII) is a 7.50x16 Jeep Service, which is somewhere between the two extremes I've chosen in tread patterns.
I think longevity depends a lot on your driving style and tyre pressure.
I've only heard good things about the ZXYs, but always in European or African based reports. Are they available here? Through whom? How much?

I got my XZLs from Bob Jane for $310 each, but I had to ring Michelin about them first. Most dealers I rang said they were unavailable in Australia and tried to sell me other sizes or other brands. I imagine the XZYs will be a similar price.
Call Michelin on 1300 727 878. They are v helpful.
