Depending on engine, which in turn determines brakes you can go down to 17" - if you have a TDV8 or a petrol V8 it is probably 19" (or maybe Commotive? 18") .

In that case standard wheels were 18" but 17" will fit - same as a TDV6 D3.

and the best kind of rims are standard LR mags, and there are engineering reasons for this.

BMW X5 17" rims have the correct load rating but you need to change the wheel nuts as the LR nuts when tightened up do not have enough thread contact with the stud threads. You need to source suitable after market wheel nuts such as Gorilla Lug Nuts in the US Gorilla Automotive Products (http://www.gorilla-auto.com/lug-nuts) - unfortunately I cannot remember what ones are needed.

I used these nuts with BMW X5 17" rims on a D4.
Gorilla® 14mm x 1.5 Chrome Lug Nuts from Brandsport Auto Parts (#GRLA-68148) (https://www.brandsport.com/grla-68148.html)

I have 4 X5 rims (no nuts) with part-worn LT245/70R17 Duratrac tyres although 265/70R17 are larger and may fit.
