Ha ha, you can see straight through me Pete...
I have bought Mick's 1970 Viscount Duralvan off him - 18 or 19' depending on where you measure it from. Here's some pics outside and in. Plans are pretty simple - clean and tidy up inside - it is in remarkable condition. Outside will eventually get a full respray and that's about it. 12 volt system will be a step up from the Franklin with around 400 watts of solar into around 300 or 400AH of batteries. Will be ditching the gas fridge in favour of an Engle like yours too. Shower and toilet where the couch is behind the kitchen area.
Outside - wheels and tyres have been replaced.

Oh yes, it's one of the biggest reasons we wanted something a bit bigger was somewhere to spread out a bit and read a paper, etc. This will work very well. [smilebigeye]
Yvonne wasn't thrilled with the colour scheme inside but with the cushions revered there's quite a bit of colour in there. By the time we add a few things, it will be fine. I'm not painting this one inside so she better get used to it... [biggrin]

Will see - this one is a LOT lower to the ground than the Franklin so not sure if it will make the turn into the last track up there. Once I've towed it around a bit and get an idea of when it drags its bum, I'll have a better idea, but if I was a betting man, I'd say yep. [biggrin]

Chassis is good but new hitch plate needs welding to the draw bar (which is made from 100x6mm C section and in very good condition). Already have the old one off and new one made, just need it to stop raining long enough to go weld it back on. Chassis has surface rust as you’d expect but solid, nothing required but a coat of rust guard paint. Brakes amazingly work - only cable units to the front axle. These will be fine to move it, but 4 wheel electrics will soon be installed. Electrics are unknown but as an Electrician, not too concerned with this either way. 240 volt stuff will be carefully checked before powering up, 12volt for the tail and clearance lights shouldn’t be an issue - have all new lights to install for this anyway. Moved the van on the weekend. Around 100KM of back roads and it towed great. Didn’t get much above 90 as I was taking it easy, but very happy. Doesn’t feel much heavier than the Franklin to tow either, the mighty Hilux hardly noticed it was there.
A pic of it on the road for the first time in 30 odd years and at its new temporary digs while I sell the Franklin.

Yeah, feels about that - only 100Kg heavier than the Franklin. Will be registering it as 1,800Kg which gives me plenty to put a few batteries and an ensuite in it.

No, had a permit but the back roads were the most direct route. Hole is where an AC is and there’s a cover for it but the hinges were shot so it was removed temporarily. 😊

I don't know much about caravans, but the interior on that looks pretty good to me, nice & original.
No leaks?...water damage can be bad news, but yours looks all good.
Did you have to attend to brakes, wheel bearings etc before towing?

Interior is very good with only minor water damage in a couple of spots in the ceiling panels. This has a full aluminium frame so no rot to worry about when repairing the leaks. Also it’s very original with all crockery, cutlery, pots and pans that were in it last time it was used 30 plus years ago - it’s a real time machine. 😊
Yes, regreased wheel bearings before moving it as well as all the shackles - cable brakes still worked fine but will be replaced with electric. Worked out while talking to the original owners Son that it’s probably only been towed about 6,000KM in its whole life.
I’ll do that in the next 2 years, probably sooner. 👍

Bit of an update - copied straight from the Classic Caravan forum, so if you've seen it there, there's nothing new here...[biggrin]
So a heap done today - just cleaning and going through every cupboard to see what was in there. Found some gems too. 😊
The video above shows the interior looking quite good, I really could get away with using like it is, it really doesn't need anything doing to it. Below arw a few shots fo the interior.
Club lounge is comfy enough - spent a bit of time kicking back in it having a cuppa or two.

Bedroom with top bunks removed - the beds will stay like this - at least for the time being, depends on what SWMBO thinks, but certainly our first two trips out in it will be just as it is.

The eagle eyed might have noticed the front awning thingy was removed, it was hanging by a thread when I went to have a look at it, so I took it home and have been rebuilding it. All new hardware which is still available easily, then sanded and painted the siding. Used a gloss enamel (Killrust gloss white) and sprayed it to see what sort of finish I can get. Much better than a paintbrush, but much more involved too, so not sure if I'll continue or not yet with this.
A couple of pics.
During painting,

After painting and reassembly which has made it much more solid and sturdy. I think it still needs another coat, but I'd assembeled it by the time I noticed, it can get a final coat when I do the rest ofnthe van. It will do for now. It's screaming out for some sort of graphic on it - any ideas? Needs to keep within the theme of a 70's van though, so nothing too modern.

Yes, it is in amazing condition for its age, but does need plenty of TLC. It sat unused in the original owners yard for nearly 30 years. Eventually it should looks close to what it did when it left the factory in 1971 but I've got plenty to do. I will be using the van while restoring it, so just need to get it usable for Corowa and Cooma for a start. If you're coming to either of those you'll get to see it in person if you want. 👍😊

Yep a Viscount this time Pedro, I'm not brand oriantated when it comes to old vans - I like them all. 😊
Based on the outline of where the old stickers were, this one is probably the one it had on it.

Well, it begins....
The Franklin is officially no longer mine and will leave the driveway this weekend to be replaced with the Viscount. I only have 5 weeks to make it ready for Corowa so it will be nose to the grindstone every spare minute now.
Will have to work out a list of priorities, but Beds, electrics and water/loo will be the highest. Anything else after that will be a bonus.
Started the big spend today - Fridge, loo, all plumbing for the entire van, deisel heater, and Victron 100/50 solar MPPT reg. OUCH!!!!
HWS is also sorted and if Ranga ever decides to send me his account details I might even pay him for it... 😆
Hopefully by this time next week, the posts will be coming thick and fast!

I hear you and that side was sorted before I moved it. Wheels and tyres on it are brand new, brakes work fine, although they are only cable over run units. Wheel bearings and spring pivots all regreased. All new exterior and rear lights put on and working, new hitch installed, although I just bought a DO35 for it, so if I fit that, I'll need to do the electric brake conversion now as well. Time, time, time... Mechanically I could tow it up your way right now Pete, would just need power and a bucket when I get there as it sits... 😁
I have dropped the original wheels off at the tyre joint to have the old rubber stripped off them, then the rims are off to the sand blasters. As I still haven't decided on a colour, that may stop me from getting the originals back on before Corowa but will see how I go.
Part of me wants to make the rims and stripe green as the original colour beneath the yellow is a dark green, and the annex is green too, but I do prefer yellow which is on it now... Thinking maybe a nice bright 70's yellow - Absinth Yellow would be my first pick...

Now I'm heading back out to the Franklin - still got to get a few things tidied up before the new owner orgaises transport.
Hopefully by the weekend the Viscount will be at home so that will make life easier. I think my big list of pressies I've ordered should start to roll up tomorrow too... 😊👍

Got stuck in this arvo and started getting it sorted. First order of buisness was to gut the entire plumbing system.

All other electrical equipent - like the inverter, solar charge controller, fues panel, etc will all live in a compartment above the batteries in the LHS main wardrobe. Will start on that when a few more items turn up like cable, charge controller, isolators, fuse panel.
Next on the list while waiting for those bits will be the removal of the old fridge. The new one is due to be delivered this week. Measurements show it is the same width, 30mm higher (there's plenty of rom for this) and slightly shallower in depth so I'll be able to make some really good venting work behind it.

An ensuite will be built opposite. Batteries weigh 120Kg all up. Toilet has 17 litre water tank + 15 liter waste tank, shower base, walls, waterproof cladding on the inside as well as shelves at the end of the cubicle on the outside with TV and other stuff. Doubtful that will be 120Kg all up but 70 or 80 I would expect. Given the whole van only weighs around 1,300Kg before I start with the add ons and it runs twin 45mm axles with bearing rated at 1,150kg each on load sharing suspension, I'm not overly concerned at this stage (famous last words) 😁
If it proves to be problematic, I can make a box that will drop all batteries below the floor level right in the middle of the axles and in the middle of the floor. Will see what it's like on its first outing. 😊
Timber framed vans are bit of a pain to repair if they are a long way gone - I've done one of these before... Thankfully the Viscount runs a full aluminium frame.

Well, new fridge is in. Love the space inside it, much bigger than the old one with the freezer compartment not there. It has adjustable shelves, LED light and room for plenty of beer and wine. 👍 The fridge is an Engel STR100. Asked the guys at the warehouse what the difference was between this outgoing model and the new model -reply was 'dunno - they look the same inside and out, might be a more efficient compressor or something in the new one' So, if anyone happens to buy the latest model of this (which retails for nearly $250 more than I paid for this one, let us know... 😁

BUT - it is very shiny and black... hmmmm. The old front panel of the old fridge is too small for it, so now have to work out how I make it look more period correct... Not an issue short term, but the looks of it will bug me for sure long term if I can't work out how to do this. Would love to find some panelling the same as what's inside the van...
Forgive the hack job on the cupboard above the fridge - I had to cut 20mm out of it and it was very flimsy - will put a trim accross there so no one notices.

If I can find it, fitting is no issue - the fridge front comes off and the panel is replacable with material up to 3mm thick. Just have to find the panelling first, it isn't made any more in this colour so the Caravan forums say and I've had no luck tracking any down.
If I could find some, I'd like about 3 sheets of it as I want to do the outside wall of the new ensuite in the same stuff as well should it be available.
Imdid just find some wallpaper that looked similar, so that might work too.

Laminex and Formica do finishes that look sort of the same - I've emailed both asking for samples.
The lighter one below is close to the main panelling colour, the darker one closer to the door colour.

A big day today and a lot accomplished even though it doesn't look like much. Rather than do the brake conversion on the LHS, I decided to get the entire RHS 100% complete. Not only did the brake wiring need installing, but the water pipes to the HWS needed attaching to the chassis, other wiring tided up, earths remade and other accosiated bits and bobs.
Electric brake wiring was fully installed from the plug to each side, and on the RHS wired all the way to the backing plate - used split corrugated conduit over the wiring where it loops down and put a P clamp at each end to make sure it will survive long term. I'm very happy with the result.
Greased the new bearings in the new brake hub, and also fitted new bearings to the back hub. While I had both wheels off, I jacked up the van at different points to allow me to remove, clean and regrease all the spring hanger pivots. Cleaned out the grease nipples and got all of these working too as a couole were bunged up with gunk. Sprayed in between the leaves to get them moving too, then degreased, wire brushed and painted everything under there. Gave the chassis a coat of silver too and it looks pretty bloody good under there now.
Couple of pics - fully mechanically overhauled and all painted up and looking ready for action again.

Probably but it’s better than almost any factory set up I’ve seen as I have secured it both ends - the wires coming out of the brake just flap about so not sure what others have done here but poking my head under a couple of modern vehicles, they are just left like this and run up to the chassis (in split conduit)...
Too late for the time being as I have no time to revisit it at the moment. I’m miles behind where I need to be. ☹️

6 circuits of 12 volt DC run and fitted off apart from the HWS and TV which aren't installed yet. Got a bit done on the lighting too, running some LED strips under the cupboards above the sink and stove which makes a huge difference.
Inverter is installed too but 240 volt side is yet to happen. Won't need this as much on this van as I'll be able to operate it easily without it apart from laptops, etc.

The antenna I want isn't cheap but in fitting with the rest of the van, I'm not skimping here and will install a Winegaurd that winds up and down from inside the van. Your'e going great Homestar.
We also have a Kogan cheapie, $99 in 2014 if I remember correctly so yes the aerial is worth a few TV's.
No traveling with the TV on the bed for me:
I have the TV permanently attached to a swivel/concertina mount which is bolted to the wall.
Around the TV with the mount collapsed flat I built a cabinet which stops the TV moving up or down.
A door stops the TV from extending the mount.
A bit of sticky back carpet here & there has the TV snug in it's cupboard while traveling.
On the left & right of the TV is a gap that you can get your hands into to pull the TV out.
The antenna booster & 12V supply lives on the wall in the top corner of the cupboard behind the TV.
45k KM, 4 years later & even a trip to Birdsville & the TV still works.
Now, why the hell do we need the TV when there is nothing worthwhile watching?[bighmmm] The aerial takes up the space needed for another solar panel.

That's a lot more than I'll do, but it will be mounted permanantly on a bracket with some sort of securing device - probably a bungy cord like in the last van... 😇. 30kkm with that and no dramas, but it isn't an off road van either.
Got 500 watts of solar going up on the roof already, I've designed it so theres just enough room for the antenna.
And no, we don't watch a lot of TV while away, but there are times on windy or cold days that is's nice just to veg out in the van for a few hours. 😊

And clad - the side wall with the door way in it is just clad in a super cheap, lightweight panel to allow privacy for the time being, but it will go when I do the ensuite properly and find the right panelling, The end wall that you see as you enter the van is done in 3mm ply - I picked this piece as it has a nice pattern in it. There will be shelves and the TV built into the end and all timberwork stained and varnished as a feature wall - more to come on that as I build it, I think it will look pretty good, it will have a book shelf and everything. 👍

No access to outside no - the guard runs all the way under there, which is why I had to raise it up like that. When it's complete, there will be a sliding draw in there for dunny roll, chemicals, etc. 👍

Got all the solar panels up today and wired in. 5 x 90 watt units - all checked, tested, cleaned and installed. 2 at the front and 3 at the back. The offset on the front panels is to allow the new antenna to go next to it.

Got a 150 watt portable panel as well I can top with if needed, but I think I've overkilled this enough - even with the cloud cover this arvo it was still keeping up with the fridge and 3 lights running and still keeping 1.6 amps going into the batteries in float mode, so not panicing too much about lack of power. 👍😊

Cooling of what? The panels? Ideally yes, they will reduce in efficiency as the temp climbs, but the extra effort in doing that doesn't warrant the effort IMO.
The other thing I could do is seal them tight to the van s the trapped air woukd provide very good insualtion - again, for the gains versus effort, not bothered.
Been running panels on the Franklin installed exactly the same for years without issue.

No, you are 100% correct - panels lose effeciency the hotter they get. Up to 25% by the time they hit 60 degrees, but with the amount of panels I have, I can afford to lose that without it worrying the system too much.

So Gav, your technically saying that I should make sure the van place should be making sure my 1 x 200w panel should be "off" the surface by an inch or so when it gets done by them in two weeks(??).

On a fixed installation on a roof, this would be the case as convection would allow cool air to enter at the bottom and the warm air exit from the top. When layed flat on a van, not sure how much it would help, but certainly a bit - ask them to see what they would normally do.

Like a lot of modern van bits, it isn't designed for older vans and although not that difficult to fit, they are designed for van manufacturers and not as an afterthought due to where the cable has to run and how solid the base needs to be. I overcame both these issues by pulling an internal ceiling panel down a couple of inches at a join and fitting a block of wood under the top mount and also ran the cable through the roof cavity at the same time. It's not 100% but it is plenty solid enough.

Yes, the panels rating is at 25 degrees. But remember it doesn't matter how much cooling you have on a 30 or 40 degree day, any panel, no matter how it is installed will be down around 10 to 15%. Also, no matter what gap you have underneath them, panels laid flat or almost flat like on a van can't vent the hot air very well anyway as the hot air rises and gets trapped under tye panel.
As for leaks, I've never had any from using ali angle like I have, using the right sealant - ie NOT silicone, will see you right. 👍

All timber will be stained a light Maple colour and varnished. TV is running off 12 volts, I don't think I'll need the inverter at all in this van to be honest.

No, not from bed - may install a second set for that but there's no way of viewing this one from there. This one will also pivot so it can be watched from outside too, but the bracket won't be in for that for Corowa. The vans changed a bit - this is to the right as soon as you come into the van where that couch was - there's a toilet there now and room for a shower when I get around to it.

Ok, shelf unit is finished for now. The shelves at the bottom will have some boxes made up to fit in them, again - after Corowa, but the rest is done. Maybe a little darker than I wanted but not unhappy at all. May put some LED strip on the top shelf as an uplight at some stage too.
The LH lower tall shelves will get some suitable 70's decor on them when I find something appropriate.

Took it for a run today - brakes are amazing but found one a bit hot (just too hot to leave my hand on, not smoking or anything) on my return so just need to back that off a bit. Apart from that, it towed very well and nothing much moved inside - apart from the TV... My first attempt at a securing measure failed and when I got home it was on the floor... Amazingly it still works!
Onto what feels like the home stretch now. It's all tidied up, with just a few items to attend to and ready to be packed during the week - after Wednesday which is Rego day. Just need one more shakedown run to ensure the brkaes and bearings are all good and settled before then.
Then I just have to service the 101, fit the brake controller to that and I'm ready.
Leaving Sunday week so 8 sleeps to go. I'm never doing something like again to a deadline - it's nearly killed me. Still a 100 things to do, but at least I can do that while enjoying it on the weekends and not worrying about a deadline.

Cutting it fine now - rego Wednesday morning but it’s sitting on blocks waiting on new tyres now. Should have them tomorrow, so not much time for a last shakedown before taking it 45 minutes up the road to VicRoads. Still have an overheating brake - it was spinning freely but obviously still dragging too much. Have backed it right off and not fussed if the brakes aren’t 100% for the rego, I’ll fiddle with them later on.

So, with new LT tyres (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/13/0/19/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=51&BEFID=96425&aon=%5E1&MerchantID=443036&crawler_id=443036&dealId=NEp8WHZzHiLsG85UaGgY1w%3D%3D&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.crazysales.com.au%2Fonline-xero-bmx-racing-scooter-with-12-pump-up-tyres-blue-steel-frame-55461.html%3Futm_campaign%3DRide%2BOn%2BToys%26utm _term%3DXG15%26utm_source%3Dshopping.com%26utm_med ium%3Dcpc%26aid%3D1%26sid%3D%7Bsdc_id%7D&linkin_id=8078072&Issdt=180306034125&searchID=p43.875966ca7adda317c6a5&DealName=Xero+BMX+Racing+Scooter+with+12+Pump+Up+T yres+-+Blue+Steel+Frame&dlprc=139.96&AR=1&NG=3&NDP=5&PN=1&ST=7&FPT=DSP&NDS=&NMS=&MRS=&PD=&brnId=14305&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&op=&CM=&RR=1&IsLps=0&code=&acode=32&category=&HasLink=&ND=&MN=&GR=&lnkId=&SKU=XG15) fitted and the brakes backed off a bit more, I trundled down to the BP near me on the freeway that's got a public 24 hour weighbridge - only to find it gone....
So, next closest is 45 minute away.... Well, good shakedown run I suppose. Off I go - went down a dirt road to shorten the trip - pretty bad corrugations, so wanted to see how it went - all good apart from the top hinge o the door came adrift... oops... 😇
Easy fix in the morning.
It towed really well - none of the issues I had originally - I've removed the AC at the back, and got a bit of weight in the front. Also I think thnew tyres (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/13/0/19/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=51&BEFID=96425&aon=%5E1&MerchantID=443036&crawler_id=443036&dealId=NEp8WHZzHiLsG85UaGgY1w%3D%3D&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.crazysales.com.au%2Fonline-xero-bmx-racing-scooter-with-12-pump-up-tyres-blue-steel-frame-55461.html%3Futm_campaign%3DRide%2BOn%2BToys%26utm _term%3DXG15%26utm_source%3Dshopping.com%26utm_med ium%3Dcpc%26aid%3D1%26sid%3D%7Bsdc_id%7D&linkin_id=8078072&Issdt=180306034125&searchID=p43.875966ca7adda317c6a5&DealName=Xero+BMX+Racing+Scooter+with+12+Pump+Up+T yres+-+Blue+Steel+Frame&dlprc=139.96&AR=1&NG=3&NDP=5&PN=1&ST=7&FPT=DSP&NDS=&NMS=&MRS=&PD=&brnId=14305&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&op=&CM=&RR=1&IsLps=0&code=&acode=32&category=&HasLink=&ND=&MN=&GR=&lnkId=&SKU=XG15) are making a difference too as I couldn't get the flat spot off the car tyres (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/13/0/19/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=161&BEFID=96457&aon=%5E1&MerchantID=509182&crawler_id=509182&dealId=TDVQ-bMhNXdIJW33NifO9Q%3D%3D&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kogan.com%2Fau%2Fbuy%2Fwhite-nights-a-colombian-odyssey-austin-galt-9781760555481%2F%3Futm_source%3Dshopping%26utm_med ium%3Dcpc%26utm_campaign%3Dshoppingnew&linkin_id=8078072&Issdt=180306034913&searchID=p28.380610a595b506a60f5d&DealName=White+Nights+-+A+Colombian+Odyssey&dlprc=27.95&AR=3&NG=3&NDP=5&PN=1&ST=7&FPT=DSP&NDS=&NMS=&MRS=&PD=&brnId=14743&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&op=&CM=&RR=3&IsLps=0&code=&acode=189&category=&HasLink=&ND=&MN=&GR=&lnkId=&SKU=white-nights-a-colombian-odyssey-austin-galt-9781760555481) previously even when I maxed out the pressure in them, but could never make them look more than 'a bit flat' but they were only rated at 400kg each and 35PSI so never going to cut it. The LT's are rated at around 600 each at 65PSI. Currently running 40, which which makes them nice and round - will play with the pressures and take some temps when I get a moment and fine tune this, but a good start.
So, I know you're all dying to know what it came in at.... I've added a known 200Kg in batteries and solar, but apart from that, removed a bit and added a bit, so take 200 off the figure below to get what it weighed to start with - roughly.
And.....
1,480Kg with a jockey wheel weight of 160Kg so a measly 1,320Kg over the 2 axles. Van had full 9kg gas bottle, spare tyre, annex, floor mat, inner spring mattress, toilet with 15 litres of water in the tank, water tank about half full (as it leaks) so only clothes and food to add.
Hoping to get the Tare registered as that, but it depends on who I get tomorrow, but regardless, it won't matter to me. They may want to keep the tare at 1,200 and I'll negotiate the GTM.
So, we'll call the original weight 1,280...
With all our crap in it, I should think we'll just top 1,600 all in - that's only 200Kg more than the Franklin. 😊

Yeah, a bit lighter than I thought too, so pretty happy. Given it's got 4 x 100Ah batteries in it and 5 x 95 watt solar panels on the roof, not much more to add, so very pleased. 👍

And REGISTERED!!!
Original tare weight on their computer was 1,200Kg. They were happy to make it 1,480Kg as per the weighbridge ticket and have the GTM 300Kg higher than that, so I'll never have it overloaded now. 👍😊
Only have bedding, clothes and food to put in it.
Still got a tonne to do, but all the major hurdles are sorted. 👍😊

So, SWMBO wasted no time and has started to pack the van. Bedding, towels, etc. I bought some clearance ready made curtains - not what I want long term, but will do for now - and have 75% of them cut, hemmed and installed. Will do the rest tommorrow night. They are a burgundy blockout which doesn't look too bad. For $50 I can't complain. SWMBO new sewing machine isn't as good as the old Singer I don't think, but I can live with it - I use it far more than she does... 😁
3 days to go, once the curtains are finished, I have 4 flyscreens I need to fix and to redo the flyscreen on the door. After that, it's just more packing, and doing a few pre trip checks on the 101.
So close now... 😊

Well, ready or not, we hit the road in a few hours - just heading an hour up the Hume tonight and staying at a friends place, then a small jump again from there up to another friends in Tatura - Both AULRO members - ain't this forum great! Monday is another small hop to Corowa from there, so not long runs - max about an hour and a half or so.

A quick update - we spent 9 nights in the van on the way to Corowa and while there for the week. Was very comfy and got a lot of attention in the middle of the oval at the caravan park. I got it home last night as it spent a couple of weeks at a farm after Corowa so once I get tidied up a bit around the house, I'll be back into it. There's still heaps to do and I got a lot of good ideas (mostly from Harry - thanks mate) 👍

Been doing a bit in the evenings and this weekend. Got the HWS fitted and plumbed in - just have to hook the gas up but I need a small bit of copper pipe - getting this from a mate during the week rather than buying a 10 metre roll, so will be complete next weekend.
Also installed the cheapy diesel heater I paid $250 delievered for - I think it may actually be too big for the van - it is a 5KW unit, but even at it's lowest setting it kicks out heaps of hot air - will see when it is actually cold though. 😁
There isn't much to them - not sure how some companies can justify over $1000 for a small casting, fan, control unit and electric fuel pump.
It draws 10 amps for around 2 minutes while starting up then drops to around 2.5 amps when running on low up to 3.5 amps going flat stick. I will have to do something with the exhaust of it - it wouldn't be much fun for other campers running it on a cold still morning - it has a horrible drone to it. Will buy a muffler for it and some exhaust wrap as well I think which hopefully will make it bearable for those around me - inside with the door closed you can barely hear it, but I wouldn't want to camp next to one that hasn't been silenced...
Not sure how it will go in sub zero conditions as the fuel line has to run under the van and it goes in the bottom of the unit so likely to freeze up when you need it most probably. Looking at how it's made, it could be modified to keep everything inside the van - will see how things pan out before I go down that path, but doable if needed.

Unit is slightly too long but can be shortened easily. Even came with anti flapper kit. Needs new canvas but that's only a few hundred dollars compared to the $800 plus a new one is. Problem is its looks... It will sit up above the roofline slightly at each end as the roofline has quite a sweep to it so thinking it will look dicky when packed up but should that concern me? Probably won't be so bad with it out, but I'm a bit torn...
Don't want to go drilling holes in the van only to find I hate it... I'll prop it up with some timber but looking for opinions here - yes or no? I won't be upset with either opinion as I really don't know myself.
Got it for nothing off next doors van as it was replaced by insurance when the fabric tore, so easy come, easy go...

That's a bit of a shame, the pull out awnings are so much more user friendly than the old ones that you have to feed through that slot on the van and then erect all those tent poles and bang in all those blasted pegs in to hold it down.
Maybe a shorter unit would look better on the van?
We have had a couple of old vans with the old style annex/awning on them and it was like WW3 when me and the missus had to put them up But I do think that they are more "Robust" than the modern pull out style awnings/annexes once they are finally erected.
Our new (To us) van has an electric push button awning so more time for "Drinkies" and a quiet chat at the end of the day and less time with "Annex Rage" like we did with the old van [thumbsupbig][bigrolf]

I used a 10 litre plastic jerry can - I’ve drilled a hole in the lid that the line goes in. I have a spare lid so I can remove the jerry can take it to the servo and fill it up then put it back again. Will take some pics tonight if I get home in time.

Yeah, easy but ugly on a van my shape - a shorter unit would end up so short it wouldn’t cover the doorway and be only about 8 feet long so pretty pointless unfortunately. I can live with doing it the old fashioned way - we only generally use it if staying more than a few nights in one spot. Given that I have an old van because I like the look of them, I’m willing to sacrifice this I think. It still has some nice stuff in it because I’m soft, but nothing that effects the overall retro look. [emoji106][emoji4]

I wouldn't be without ours but then we are not retro, or anything for that matter. Maybe a Fiama cassette type awning would be better suited. The legs fold into the cassette before closing so you don't have those big arms folded up against the side of the van like with some awnings. Just a thought...

It's not the legs that are the problem but the fact any fixed awning like that will stick out above the roofline at each end if I want it any longer than 6 to 8 feet. Was only a thought as I got this one for zip, but won't be spending any money pursuing the idea.

Here's some pics.
First one shows where the tank lives - at the back of the cupboard where the heater lives. I'll be screwing a baton to the floor and using an occy strap to secure it.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/389.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/265L1si)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/265L1si) by Gavin Gregory (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150806513@N06/), on Flickr
Tank dragged out so you can see it. 2 tight fitting holes drilled in a spare cap - vent goes outslde the van. The tank has been there almost a week full of fuel and no diesel smells in the van. Holes are very tight around the line - they won't leak bugger all even when the van is being towed slopping the fuel around. Cap only needs one full turn from tight on to off so lines don't get tangled up.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/390.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/265L1rM)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/265L1rM) by Gavin Gregory (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150806513@N06/), on Flickr
Lastly with the cap removed - vent line only just goes in and the pickup all the way - have a bit of steel tube to attach to the line so it stays on the bottom and can maximise the fuel usage but still testing so that isn't done yet. Original cap is still on the tank on a strap so can pull it out, fit the original cap and trundle to the servo to fill it. 10 litre capacity, same as the OEM tank so plenty of hours of heat.

So, after a couple of outings we've worked out that single beds just don't work for us, so decided to start on changing that today. Utilising all existing materials to make it look as factory as possible. Pic below is what it looks like with the singles before deconstruction. Will be a bit of a compromise as you'll see when it's done - while there will be plenty of room to walk down each side of the bed, there will be no room to get arpund the end of it, so stepping over it or sitting down and swinging your legs over will have to do. 1 more foot of van would have been ideal... 😁

Swapped the beds left to right. You can also see below how I've cut the cupboard in half and swapped that left to right as well. It's just sitting there to see how it would all fit.

And all screwed down again, ready to go. Looks a bit crappy as I've overlapped the ply rather that cut it down but this was both easier and made the resulting structure stronger. When the matress is down, you won't see it.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/47.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/26LFFku)Untitled (https://flic.kr/p/26LFFku) by Gavin Gregory (https://www.flickr.com/photos/150806513@N06/), on Flickr
I'll start on the cupboards tomorrow and tidying up the staples that are sticking out everywhere. Going to make up a new padded bedhead that folds out at the bottom to allow the bed to be used as a day bed - more to come on that. Nothing stopping me putting the mattress in and heading out again! Not bad for 4 hours work. 👍😊
So, although not ideal for access it will make it better for sleeping overall.

Not bad for a re-purpose job. Always satisfying when you can do something for nothing but a bit of elbow grease & some staples.
I don't know if you have seen that some of the shorter vans with full island beds have the mattress in 2 pieces & a flip up shelf/extension arrangement on the end of the bed. This shelf enables you to lengthen the bed when both bits of the mattress are laid flat next to each other. During the day, the narrower bit of the becomes the backrest of the day bed & the main mattress is pushed up & the shelf folded down/retracted giving you more floor space.

Got one side cupboard finished. Lots of stuffing around cutting the old bits down but worth it. I did make a big stuff up cutting the top - I made a pattern up - that ended up a bit small by the time I trimmed it all down. I knew I needed to add 10mm to each edge that was showing. A mate showed up for a cuppa before I cut the top and and you guessed it, when I got back to it, I just used the template and didn't add the 10mm. 😩
Had to use the black quad to cover the gap - same stuff as runs all around the floor so not too out of place but not what I had in mind.
Bottom opening will stay open for shoe storage, etc. Have some trims to fix around the opening once the glue has dried on the last bit of trim that the clamps are holding on, but that's another day...

I feel for you but only you know that it wasn't designed like that. When I built my van's kitchen & pushed all 3 big drawer fronts through the table saw at the same setting, 20mm too small!! At least it was a consistent stuff up. I didn't have enough ply to redo so stuck some solid edging on to hide the stuff up. Sitting here typing this, I can see the stuff up & it still bugs me but 3 years later, I still haven't fixed it.
So keep it as long as possible for as long as possible & measure twice, cut once & still stuff it up.[bawl]

Ok, finished one side of the bed off. Not 100% happy but it's ok. The carpet I'm happy with - it's almost an exact match for the original - same style but just a shade or two lighter, so all good there, I think it looks fine. The gold trim I used at the top edge on the wall is a bit thick for my liking but beggars can't be choosers - I needed 3 decent lengths so had to go with what's available these days - looks ok. The bottom cupboard bit will get a curtain hung in it as well I think which will help break up the beigeness (is that a word? 😁 ) of the area.

The tale of matching bedside lamps.
Been chasing some matching anodised bedside lamps for a couple of weeks and found 2 identical units from different sellers on ebay. Both have arrived and now been stripped back, cleaned sanded and repainted as the finish on them both was faded.
Time to make them work off 12 volts - you used to be able to buy 12 volt BC light globes, but no more from what I could find - these would have been too power hungry anyway, so this arvo I knocked up a couple of LED globes from some puck lights, old 240 volt globes and some bits of wood and glue.
Started by breaking out the old glass to get the bit I needed.

Stayed home this weekend and got a bit more done. Double bed is pretty much complete apart from a draw, top of the draws on SWMBO side and a couple of bits of trim. After that, only a bit of wiring to complete then it's onto the ensuite which will complete the interior. Hopefully have all that done by the time it starts to warm up again, so I can get stuck into the exterior come Spring.
So a reminder of before -

Long time between posts here, but a lot more has been done. Most notably is that I have started on the exterior. Have bought a heap of tinted acrylic and started replacing all the windows. Got a few on the side windows done but more that that have the whole back window sorted - removed, cleaned, rotting sill replaced, tinted windows and new glazing rubber installed including making up a form to bend the new side windows which worked out great. Back painted and new stickers applied.
Looks pretty good IMO, and a LOT of work on this end - around 4 days solid work removing, cleaning and replacing the back window set. Not sure what I’m going to do with the old AC hatch below the number plate, will sort that in time.

So a bit more done - have bought the 12 volt system into the 21st century with a new lithium battery and some shiny new Victron bits - a solar controller and a battery monitoring system so I can see what the new battery is up to.
Out with the old - 400Ah of deep cycle batteries weighing in at over 120kg, and the old PWM charge controller.

In with the new - 100Ah Lithium weighing in at 15Kg - For those that don’t know, the Lithium’s capacity can be fully utilised whereas the lead acid batteries are good for around half their stated capacity depending on how you discharge them, worse than that if you hit them hard. The Lithium’s discharge is also linear no matter what load is applied.

So I’ve spent the last 2 weekends in the van - 7 nights in total. New power system is doing the job admirably and I’ve got no concerns with its long term suitably. Having run everything I need to including the heater for several hours on a few cool nights, the battery is more than up to the task. Main load is the 90 litre Engel fridge and lighting. Even on overcast days the solar controller is dropping to float mode well before lunch. Even with warner temps when the fridge will work harder I have no doubt it will keep up.
Shower cubicle is also water tight and operating now although final panelling is to be completed. Will need to upgrade the size of the water tank but I knew that already.
Overall very happy. Having thoughts on changing the double bed as well now, but I’ll probably sort that after I finish the exterior. That’s probably the next thing - finishing the window replacement and repainting it. 👍

FYI - I didn't use my phone at all over the last 2 weekends to look at the batteries - just checked the meter once or twice and checked to see when the solar controller dropped into float mode.
Only time I've used the app so far is to set up the system and to show others, not actually to use it myself. It's still a great system but I don't really need the bells and whistles. And as for TV, if I was building another van, I wouldn't even bother. I seem to put the antenna up, scan the channels, sigh and turn it off again...

I actually played on a weighbridge just the other weekend with it so I know all the figures. Remember that old vans are very lightweight compared to more modern vans, so while mine is a featherweight for its size, I wouldn’t want to tow it down 100km of corrugated dirt roads - wouldn’t be much left of it I don’t think, so weight very much depends on how it’s built and how much nice stuff is inside it.
With van attached.
Hilux with me in it (GVM 3,000Kg GCM 5,650Kg)
Front axle - 1,280Kg
Rear axle - 1,480Kg
Van
Front axle - 700Kg
Rear axle - 700Kg
After that I dropped the van off and got the following. (Van GTM 1,760Kg)
Van total - 1,540Kg
Jockey wheel - 140Kg

Anyone know what this thingy, in the ceiling, is or does? 154937 It has a 0-3 dial, says "Auto Rain Sensing", "Push Auto/Pull Manual", "In/Out" and a cold to hot temperature dial.
I didn't get any manuals whatsoever[bigsad]
By now you will have worked out that is the air Discharge Diffuser for the Air Con. ie. 1-3 Fan speeds. Thermostat. Push Pull Fan, cycles fan on Heat or runs Continuously on Cooling.
I guess the Auto Rain do da could auto fold/roll an Awning or such or even bring up a visual reminder that your dry washing is still on the line [smilebigeye]or maybe there is a damper above the unit outside that closes in conjunction with the IN/Out switch. ie. motor is reversible to introduce Fresh air or Exhaust Air.
"That'll be 120 bucks thanks mate. Have a nice day. "PayPal will do nicely"[biggrin]

It's called a Fantastic Vent. The lid is motorised & will close if it rains & the fan is in auto. Plenty of manuals on the web. Enjoy.

No, your oneupmanship effort has created another thread. I'm sure Gav will be pleased to dump his, unless he has added yet more features/junk.
[biggrin]
As for your original question. I'd give myself 7 out of 10. Coming from ground zero & never having seen one before I don't think I scored all that bad. [bigsmile1]
Tell you what I'll do guv, is give you a credit on my $120 service fee I'll make it a round ton, ok?
Can't say fairer than that Guvnor.[biggrin][biggrin]

Nothing added recently, no features or junk. 😁
It’s down the farm for a while as I’m about to dig up the driveway where it usually resides to run a new 3 phase supply to the house. Apart from paint and the paneling in the bathroom, mines all done. Nothing to add - it has all the mod cons like a door and windows. 👍

That is handy especially if you want to move around or see out.[smilebigeye]

I did have a van once with no door and only a few windows. Easy to get in and out of but a bit breezy. The dogs seemed to enjoy it no end though. [biggrin]
