View Full Version : Upraded Vortex exhaust on TD5 Disco

Keen to hear peoples thoughts - either positive or negative - on upgrading the exhaust system on my Manual TD5 Disco. Anyone else done anything similar or have any experience with such a mod? What did people pay and are you happy?

I am trying to get a bit more low down torque plus a bit more power and currently have the Bruce Davis re-mapped ECU. The exhaust system has been developed by an exhaust crowd here on the Gold Coast and Bruce Davis and by all accounts will give a reasonable increase in performance.
3" manderil Vortex system goes from turbo right out with muffler and resonator and comes in at $1200 fitted.

Thanks in advance for all comments, Mick

Hey Mick,

Someone asked about this before.....but not much response.

Sounds like a lot of expense for not much gain.....I can it it's application would be more for hard tuned, high performance, turbo road cars.

HIJACK ALERT

Mick,

How'd you go getting your Chip dramas sorted?

Didn't see that post Cavemen but the link to the website is the crowd I spoke to. It is a bit of cash but i'm at the stage where I will try anything to get some more torque down low and get the turbo to spool quicker, any other suggestions? Sometimes wish I had the torque converter that comes with an auto as this would solve a lot of my issues, but I wont give up my manual!!!

Rick's 4x4 recommend these guys and as I said, they have been working for some time with Bruce Davis trying to produce something specific to the TD5 engine.....might give BD a call first and here what he says about it.

Sorted to a point, had the power back on for a few weeks now and suspect the major issue lies in perhaps a sticking valve somewhere. Still convinced that the ECU has changed the throttle reponse though as it was far more responsive with the standard ECU in it when testing a few weeks ago. Apparently BD was going to re visit the '99 remapped ECU as he has had a few people come back to him with issues....that reminds he said call back in a month to see where he was at and it has been a month......will keep you posted.

Thanks for the input, Mick

$1200 is a lot of moolah for a 3" mandrel bent exhaust.
Hiline has a full 3" system on his 'fender 130 and, IIRC, only cost between $4-500. A full 3" mandrel bent exhaust/muffler/resonator for our TD42T Patrol including a new, cast 3" ID high flow dump pipe for the turbo costs $660 from MTQ/DTS.
Do a search, there was a long thread on 3" exhausts a few weeks back.

The vortex exhaust has been available in UK for some time.

It was reviewed in one of the UK mags.
Guy reckoned his 300Tdi could leap buildings at a single bound.

I am vry dubious as looks like a reverse Hiclone to me.
I think that the increase was probably less backpressure from no muffler.

I just cannot see how the spiral thing accelerates exhaust gas and pulls it out of the engine as claimed. Perpetual Motion. ie it makes energy.

What I gathered from the previous threads is that the power increase with the 200/300Tdi is noticable as the original exhaust system is quite restrictive. However the TD5 already comes out with a 2.5" exhaust system with only a few bends, so the decrease in exaust gas pressure from upgrading to a 3" system is minimal, and only worth the money if you have alot to spare and have already done all the other mods.

A quick, cheap fix is to remove the centre muffler. For 5% of the price of the new system you may get 30-50% of the performance gain (in quicker spool up). Just to clarify, the price comparison was done on a $1200 system verses the $60 straight pipe with 2 flanges, and the performance gain figures were just made up.

Thanks Sequel, have you done this or know it will work and do you mean removing the muffker and resonator or just the muffler? I know next to nothing about exhausts so any help is appreciated plus if anyone knows where best to get a simple system done on the Gold Coast.

Aye, Mick

You can take out both but it will be pretty loud. A 3" system will definately be better, but probably not worth the money. If you go to any exhaust place, my understanding is they can unbolt the centre muffler an put in a straight bit of pipe with 2 flanges. They beauty of this is that it will give you some idea of benifit with out being expensive, and if it is too noisy, you can simply put your old muffler back in. I suppose the same goes for the rear silencer.

If the disco is an everyday driver, you can have both mufflers removed and replaced with the striaght pipe for weekends away, and put one/both the mufflers back in for everyday use.

I haven't done it myself, but will be removing the centre muffler soon, assuming I can get it done for less than $100. The main difference I believe will be the turbo spooling up quicker and so producing a little more power earlier, but no more power overall. And of course it will sound better!

Thanks Sequel, some interesting reading on those threads, thanks for the links
Pretty much decided not to put the Vortex system in but may look at either taking out the muffler or just going for the 3" straight through from the Turbo and I think it was Hiline who had the hot dog muffler - that may be the go to keep the noise down slightly. Need some more input and another chat with an exhaust shop as my main goal is to add torque (get the turbo spooling faster) and if that comes with a sweeter exhaust note and a bit more power throughout, that's a bonus https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Thanks again and talk soon, Mick

Hi,

Just a quick question :

Do Vortex mufflers sell mufflers suitable for the northern hemisphere and another for the southern hemisphere?

as we all know about "Coriolis Force" and the consequences of puting on the wrong one.

Cheers Aston

Aston,

No idea "Coriolis Force" hey?

Sounds like a Latin swear word!

Hi Mick
If you are willing to spend $1200 on the exhaust, why not talk to a turbo shop,that$1200 would go a long way to modifying the turbo to correct the factory design fault. Our mitsi Trytoo has a lot more effecient turbo, the thing has no where near the lag of a TD5 turbo.

I sourced a Non cat front pipe from the wreckers, the improvement is remarkable https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ .I cant wait to have a staight thru pipe in the centre. 8)

And look at disabling your EGR, who hoo. It takes one small home made plate 2mm mild steel, and two ball bearings in your vaccum lines. They sell kits for this in europe.
You will poop yourself when you see inside your inlet manfold the oil from your CCV gets cooked by the EGR. real messy and abrasive.

I have also installed a RACOR CCV 4500, to remove all the oil from the intake air. :?

I think the vortex is good but I think all that money for an extra 0.5 of an inch is alot. especilly when there are so many cheaper things you can do for more result. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

IMHO
